Ha Ha Gerson and W.W. have NOTHING to worry about because without any distribution net work It is imposable for this "Golden Star" to sell a single panel to the consumer. With a 5k buy in and 10k per year sales ;Hopefuly somebody, or some body shop will buy in and make this stuff available. _________________ Vw collection 60 combi ,61 panel ,62 deluxe micro,82 diesel Westfalia,88 Vanagon synchro,98 Jetta tdi,11 Jetta tdi mt ,11 Jetta tdi dsg.

Not positive but it sure looks like the panels Wolfsburg west is selling. So the network is already in place before this started. Maybe Wolfsburg west had an exclusive contract that expired?? |

To the non-English speaking guy in China that came up with it it probably sounded like a really cool English phrase. _________________ 1973 Superbeetle: 1st car, owned since age 12. Update thread --> https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9919140#9919140

If they try to sell a complete skeleton plus the front nose installed, I wonder if VW will slap them with a cease and desist?
VW owns basic design patents on the silhouette of both the beetle and bus, and can stop anyone from copying them. Wonder if they will? |
The patents have long expired. They are generally 20 years.
They cannot (effectively) trademark the shape of the vehicle. Colt losing patents on .45 1911s and AR15s is a useful analogy. Obviously no other manufacturer can call their products "AR15" or put a Colt emblem trademark on their guns, but hundreds manufacture guns with parts that interchange w a 1911 or AR15, without a license and/or paying royalties. _________________ Ohio Valley Tribe, Full Moon Bus Club https://www.facebook.com/groups/294422277314227/

Older design (911 patents expired) versus newer models of VWs.
The VW article even discusses (VERY vaguely) "design protection" (which means patent in this case). The basic premise is that if you create something, you get 20 years patent protection (generally, and in the US... Im not sure about EU and dont care enough to search). Just because you continue producing a product doesnt mean your patent is extended beyond 20 years. Your patents expire after 20 years regardless (again, generally, innthe law there are always exceptions).
The "Euroean court" decided the 911 hadnt changed enough to be a new model getting a new 20 years (or whatever the exact # of years is in EU), but with VW the models listed (T5 and others) had changed enough to warrant new 20 year periods.
VW is agressive with trademark fights, but they lost or folded on most, especially when they had those clowns at Continental in Indianapolis harassing every bug shop. I kmow this from first hand experience. _________________ Ohio Valley Tribe, Full Moon Bus Club https://www.facebook.com/groups/294422277314227/

I just realized the physical address of this place is like 15 min from me. I'm going to go check it out and see if anything actually exists there. |
Update: emailed asking about a new roof for my 64 kombi that a tree fell on way back when. They don't stock onsite in Ohio but he said it was a 4 day lead time for my choice of a solid roof, rag, or window section. The gentleman I talked to is based in the Ohio office though. _________________ Matt Johnson

What exactly did you find at the physical address? The address that I posted about several pages back appeared to be a non-descript industrial yard of open-air shelters and such. Is this where his office resides? |

I didn't stop in yet but I know exactly where it is, it's basically a steel building with an office in front, it used to be a HUD type office if I remember correctly. That is where his office is at according to him and he said I could pick up any of the items they sell there at that location. _________________ Matt Johnson

I see. I was just curious if that's also where his craftsmen (partially) assemble them, although my initial curiosity was based on a Google Maps image which didn't reveal an actual enclosed building where the thumbtack was pinned (it could just be a mapping error). It'd be nice if they offered tours of the place, one could get an idea how busy they are (or aren't). I suppose fit and finish would be difficult to judge since the nose/windshield frames and doors aren't even attached by them, and that's where the rubber (or "fit") meets the road. |

I found this thread because I found this website: https://classicsteelbody.com
MY question after reading all the pontification and posturing is this: Have any of you actually build a bus using one of these bodies?
We can talk about value and the market all day, but the real question is are they worth a shit or not?
Yes, this will appeal to some people because for them it is a LOT cheaper than spending months carving out rust, chopping out chunks of bus, buying a ton of new steel, welding or paying someone to weld it all in and all the associated body work. If you know how to do all this great. If not you have to pay someone, and that gets very expensive very quickly.
So again my question is have any f you worked with one or not? |

I havent heard of anyone using any of the VW parts they offer. I will say they were quick to respond, their buy in seems reasonable, website seemed functional and they offered other vehicle types as well.
Motortrend had some show where they built a whole early Bronco body with parts from Golden Star I got all excited to see the fit up but they only showed a few assembly pics then the completed shell. I wonder if the fit up was so bad they edited out all the cussing from the crew? _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild
