Hey guys I don't dabble in the water cooled very much but I was thinking about picking this one up and I wanted some advice.

It's an 83 rabbit, 5-speed manual, air conditioning, runs really good, great-looking body except for two rust spots, and I'd like to know what you guys think.

I see at least three rust spots.

Fixing rust in not a skill of mine. There is just not a rust issue in my area. The windshield rust needs to be resolved soon or you'll have water leaks inside. Maybe you already do.

The trunk lid would be a simple swap with a good/non rusty one

Under the rear soft top may be fixable without any body panels.

Looks good otherwise.

@Butcher - rust repair is not a skill of mine either. I must pay to have that fixed. Yes the cowl under the windshield would probably be replaced or at least that section. The rear can just be filled I think. Where is the 3rd rust area? The hood? I don't see it. It looks very dirty beyond where you can easily wipe a rag but I didn't notice rust.

Any idea what the top value would be? Would $3500 be decent?

$3,500 would be GREAT... for the seller.

That's a $1,500-$2,500 car.

3500.00 is too much, I just picked up an 88 in similar condition for 1075.00 in PA. Runs great, same windshield rust, not as advanced but will be the same to repair nonetheless. That part is about 60 bucks, welding and bodywork will depend on how much you can do. My rear hatch is solid and the chassis has absolutely no rust. Spare tire area looks factory fresh.

3500.00 is a premium price for that car, but the cheap ones are getting hard to find, but they are out there. For that price it should be rust free with good useable top and interior.

It appears there is rust under the edge of the soft top [fabric meets body,RR].

I could be wrong but it looks like it.
