We finally had the chance to take our Westy out for the first time overnight. I’m happy to report he did fantastic. Cruised along at 50-55 on the highway, good temperatures, drove beautifully there and back. We went to a campground super close to home (around 30 miles) just in case. We’ll start small as I get more comfortable driving, and learn the sounds and smells.
I wanted to say thank you to the forum. I have thanked you all many times before for the help in choosing him, getting him across the country and getting many things figured out and fixed. But finally getting to spend a night, and having a great trip with my wife, that was so far and above any of the smaller wins. We had an awesome time, slept well, and it gave us a taste of what traveling in a Westy can be like. We’re hooked, will be taking him out to a festival in 2 weeks for a couple of days. Can’t wait!!
Here’s some shots, and cheers!

Very cool of you to acknowledge help you've had here, and know *exactly* how you feel finally getting out for that first night. Unforgettable.
Congratulations, and Thanks Back.

Absolutely, I was so glad my wife was understanding and ready for the possibility of spending time on the back of a tow truck. She brought a bottle to break open and celebrate if we made it there. We were hopeful for an uneventful ride there and back, but if something went down, that would have been fine too.
She also loved the comfortable sleep vs our usual tent time. We’re life-long campers, but can’t deny a great night in a camper...
Thanks again guys! _________________ 84 Westy with 1.9 wbx |

Nice!
I remember my first night in my old Westy. I’ve camped for years in various ways, but that first trip was like, “Holy cow!” This thing rules for camping! _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

Congratulations on making that first trip, even if it’s close by for a test run( smart idea)
E1 and I are a ‘bit’ biased about Assuan Brown,,,
Our first trip overnight way back in the mid ‘80s with our ‘68 Westy ended up with a young goat( Kid) walking through the open Slider Door first thing in the morning when we had gotten up.
We were staying way out in Missouri on a Co-workers property, and they had Goats....
I’m betting you didn’t have to shoo an animal out of your Westy early dawn... _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

Haha, nope, thankfully in the morning it was still just the two of us in the Westy. Although two summers ago we were camping on the side of a mountain, and I slowly woke up from a dream which had a cowbell going. Don’t remember the details. Turns out our tent was surrounded by random sheep and the leader had a big cowbell around its neck - and that had made its way into my dream. Not the same but still just as fun... 😀 _________________ 84 Westy with 1.9 wbx |
