Finally addressed the problem I had with worn out front end on my 1974 deluxe type 1. Rather than pay a shop I had the luxury of having two friends help. One a semiretired local VW mechanic with all the tools including a lift and I also got help from type3Tim the steering box man. Actually it was more like a sequel to grumpy old men but we got it done. A tall order the job was upper and lower ball joints. All tie rods, steering damper and of course a tuned up new steering gear box. Perfectionists we are made us also re weld broken bumper mounts and make some adjustments using porta tool to correct previous front end damage. We used some presses that allow joints to be installed on the car and a good mechanic could get it done faster doing it this way. Here’s a few pics

We got it pretty well adjusted using these tools to set alignment and I must say it drives like a nice car now tracks straight no more shimmy. Got rid of the bungee cord holding bumper, welded supports both sides re leveled. This was a lot of work for three grumpy old men, especially when one of them had a knee replacement two weeks ago.

It’s probably got a million miles on it, got used in the shop better than 25 years sure helps when you’ve got an experienced hand guiding you through the job but even so this is tough ass grunt work and leaves you filthy with grease. Very Happy

Wish I had that press when I did mine.

And a few ideas to help align the front end.
