Sounds like something with a lot of mass. Either inside or behind the engine.
Flywheel loose maybe?
Pressure plate loose?
Input shaft slop or bad bearing?(I cant remember if these are bushed or have bearings)

If it's not the cam, it could be that I guess

Loose spark plug, intakes hitting the sheet metal, lost and forgot nut dropped at some point? Sounds located at the dist or fuel pump area

I would use a stethoscope before tearing it apart

I changed the plugs 3 days ago.
Intakes clear the tin easily.

Anything I can check around the fuel pump area? I've tightened the nuts, should I try a different fuel pump?

Sounds like popcorn being made with ball bearings. Maybe pull the fuel pump and check the shaft and bottom of the fuel pump.

Better yet, remove the fuel pump and its pushrod then briefly run the engine to see if the noise stops. Cover the hole so oil doesn't sling out.

Goes away under load and you can’t find it outside the motor. Thinking connecting rod knock. I don’t typically jump to expensive conclusions but I’m currently rebuilding a motor that sounded the same. I too went through searching for it only to have the rod bind up and somewhat seize the motor. My money would be on a bad rod. Hope it isn’t

Loose wrist pins, or wrist pin bushings can sound like that, especially at idle when they're just spinning under minimal load.

Good idea, the weather is terrible today, thunder and lightning and lots of rain,
so i will have to wait for a bit.

This makes more sense than a loose rod, had a loose rod on a old motorbike once, made a ratteling / knocking sound in every gear.

seems like you know the work ahead of you; start digging and you might end up with a split case before you know what the issue is.

I'd hate to pull the engine, I don't have a good place to work in anymore, I have a spare linebored case, might build it and swap it over, not sure if I can wait that long.

Today was a very hot day, i drove for about 20 miles,

and after about 10 miles i was waiting at a red light and the noise went away.

will check again tomorrow when the engine is cold.

A “loose rod” (I said rod knock) and a bad wrist pin are the same thing. btw. Only ones I saw where bad bushings (at wrist pin)

Glad it went away. Hope it doesn’t come back.

I can't believe you've gone through all you have without using a stethoscope as suggested several times earlier in your thread. Any old stick or a big screwdriver will suffice. Or maybe you have but haven't said? It's quite soothing listening to your tappets like this. Smile

Good luck with it. That it went away sort of makes you think something temporarily flicked it clear then it fell back off it's temporary perch. Clutch bolt?
