Working on a 67 bus. Can't get the steering wheel off. It's bending the angle iron puller I made. 1 ½" x ⅛" angle should not bend.
Have a 65 single cab that I pulled the steering wheel off in about 2 minutes... What's happening? Key jammed / binding? It doesn't look out of place...
Has anyone had this happen? How did you get the wheel off without destroying it?
Thanks

probably dissimilar metals fused together (like the Alloy wheels on my lowrider mini-truck) Deep Creep from seafoam is good for this dissimilar metals issue.
for sure leave the nut on a few threads, your face will thank me later _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

PB blaster or Aerokroil (more expensive) work great- but they require reapplication- sometimes over the course of a couple weeks. But the key is patience. Too many people spray that stuff and expect it to be ready to beat on in a half hour. Let the chemicals do the job. _________________

I had this steering wheel off a year ago and it came off no problem. I'm thinking the key was misaligned when put back together and now binding. I literally can't budge this thing..
Pb blaster or aerokroil still going to work in this case? |

No, it is the tapered shape of the steering column and the steering wheel hub. This has the same effect at the "morse taper" used on machining equipment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_taper
You will definitely want to use a suitable puller with an adapter like this one VW202P
Dont forget to unscrew the ring, that cancels the turn-signal on the bottom of the steering-wheel hub. _________________ - Michael

The bold part is excellent advice if you don't have a puller and you decide to use a hammer.

Another piece of excellent advice, unless you want to buy new parts. _________________ Anthony
