Hello,

As said in the subject line, I just installed a NOS stock shift cage and now the tranny won't go into first gear. It feels like there is a 'wall' where the first gear slot should be. All the other gears work fine.

Two years ago, I dropped the engine/tranny and replaced the shift plate and shift ball in the nose cone.

The tranny has been working well except for the loose gear shift lever. When I removed the old shift cage, it was clear that it was loose at the fitting where the cage and grub screw collar meet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Jeff

Have you tried adjusting the stop plate on the floor under the shifter?, I'd begin by tapping it a few mm to the left since it sounds like you are almost in reverse right now.

Ok long story short . 1970 Bay window , "NevrFalia". I rebuilt my shifter system complete. I tried every suggestion to fix shifting problems, always close but still a pain. I took out cheap parts, put in top of the line parts, still the same. I took out all play by welding where there was wear, still the same. Finally after messing with it for a couple of months off and on, yep don't drive it every day, I figured out that the upper housing of the shifter, the one the boot goes on, has to narrow slots to make the necessary adjustments. I took out the back bolt and moved the housing and plate over towards the divers side and presto it shifted like bran new. So I took a burr and made the slots wider, end of story. I had done some floor repairs did this distort the placement of the holes in the floor, I couldn't say. It did not seem so, but there you are. Thanks for the help guys it has solved many problems in the past for me. This is first post for me. img]https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1828263.jpg[/img]
