Some long awaited updates from the René Große workshop. The guys have been busy welding up the roof section.

With the bulk of the roof in place they are continuing down to the lower rear end and sides. The first step on the sides of the body are the rear quarter panels.

The flat metal pieces then shaped to flow with the body lines.

Time to dial in the lower rear bodywork. Interesting how they decided to use foam between the wooden ribs to give more precise detail in a section that needs it more. This area has a lot going on with compound curves of the lower rear end and the swooping lines of the W shape.

Amazing work. The HAZ looks huge, is that all torch welded? I love using the torch but I've always struggled with sheet metal, it's an incredible skill _________________ 36hp '56 European DeLuxe oval, '70 bug 1835cc dual 36DRLA, and a '98 4x4 5spd single cab Tacoma |

Earlier pics show panels being gas welded. A gas weld is very soft and workable so planishing stretches the metal back into shape to reverse the shrinking in the HAZ. Its soft enough that planishing can flatten the weld bead so little or no grinding is needed. _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. Take the best that exist and make it better. Amazing work! Being a highly skilled woodworker and a amateur metal bender, it is amazing to see those two worlds interact so well together. The one compliments the other so perfectly!
Huge props to you! That has got to make you just sit back and stare at your craftsmanship. It would me. Heck, I would have gotten the jig made and sat back down for several months! Just staring in amazement!
This is really cool! How big is that English wheel I keep seeing in the back ground? Because those panels are not small. _________________ Jimbo

They're welding it the old-school way. This is how the Daimler Benz workers at Sindelfingen would have done it. I'm amazed how they are able to keep the metal straight.

Another exciting update on the W30.
The guys are starting on the sills below the doors and rear quarter panels. On a regular Beetle this is where the heater channel is located but the W30 had no heater at all. The sill is also much thicker.

How does that work over the foam?, it must get stinky. Unless you tack it and remove it to complete the weld, but how do you remove the entire shell and keep it aligned??
Just curious, great work there, just running some of the logistics of the job around in my mind. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

The rear end is taking shape too. Note that the location of the engine lid has been sketched in by tape and the rear quarter window location drawn on the fresh metal.

I'm just guessing here - they probably remove the large panels to complete those welds. That may be the reason for all those tie-down straps so that the panels are easily removed and reinstalled as needed. We saw in the earlier photos how the roof panels were being welded and hammer-finished off he buck. _________________ Check out my Facebook page: Volkswagen Prototypes. |
