I'm thinking there was a big push to get the car to a certain stage for HO, the team are probably still recovering

Thanks for posting finster, really gives a great feeling of how it was to see the original bodies for the first time.
The rear end looks so spot on compared to other replicas. The front I'm still not 100% sure yet, but I'm certain these guys have or will get it right if it still needs a tweak. Of course it could be how I see the original photos, and then comparing to modern pictures and video.
Looking forward to the next update.

After a long-deserved break the team have rolled up their sleeves again and work has commenced on the W30. The car is now back at the Hessisch Oldendorf workshop. The photos in this post offer a rare glimpse of an angle unlikely seen of this car. Up on the hoist the entire underside of the W30 can be checked out. The body and chassis were separated again to allow work to progress on both. Enjoy the photos of the W30 from below!

These type of angles really show some details we'd never get a chance to learn about otherwise. She's a thing of beauty for sure.

With great excitement I bring you this - the W30 in first coat of primer! It really brings the entire shape together. Still plenty of work to do but, oh-boy, does it look sexy or what? The final color will be a grey from the 1936/1937 Mercedes range.

Stunning.
And the colour choice is perfect. Either dripping nitro black or period grey were the only two options in my mind.
It will compliment 38/06 very nicely, while still looking like a black and white photo on its own

Amazing progress by the team, its like looking at a period photo but in colour.
The body looks so smooth now, I don't know if that's the effect of the primer or its been worked on, I suspect the latter. So many details I've not noticed before such as the headlight shroud over the front wing/ fender is separate and then joined leaving the visible lip around it.
Keep up the great work guys.

It's amazing how much of an impact a coat of primer makes on its appearance. The lines now flow smoothly. It looks absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to see the completed car. Thanks for the updates!

Well, can’t blame lenses distortion now. The amount of work done to get to this point is not lost on me. So it pains me to mention that the front roofline is still to short. Notice the original roofline had more of a bulbous look to it. I like the new rendition however, it has the gentle curve that we have all grown to love.

Certainly when looking at the door frame where the glass will go does look a different angle at the front, it seems to curve straight away, whereas the period photo it goes up straighter before curving. It almost looks like the modern body has a roof chop at the A pillar, indeed the gutter finishes lower down. Also the rear wing/ fender at the lower quarter panel has a different curve. And maybe the side rear window shape looks a little rounder on the period photo.
The primer maybe for protection of the body and a way to assess where it is compared to the original W30's, and although drastic, maybe these changes can still be made?

Any modification can still be made, at a cost. It seems in retrospect that building the doors first would have been a better starting point, before shaping and fixing the roof. The shape of the door window openings are probably easier to replicate than many of the other parts, since they are more or less flat. It definitely is too low in the A-pillars, and visibilty between the A and B pillars restricted.
I can only admire the courage of the Grundmann team who openly shares those pictures for all us amateurs to comment. Getting this 100% is exceedingly difficult.

They were all made to some form of pattern, so the variances were probably not that noticeable. This pic shows a form much closer to the recreated doors. The dark car on the wooden bucks probably has some form of distortion from the optics.
