This bolts onto the bulk head under the spare tire on Super Beetles.

Here is the area where it bolts to.

Does anyone know what is it? My 79 Convertible does not have it, and neither have any of the Super Beetle I have owned in the past. They all had the open square hole and I always suspected something should be there.

It's a deformation panel, it soaks up impact in a crash. Sometimes they get removed to install A/C or access the shift rod. They all came with one from the factory.

I call it the bash-crash plate, however, the first response was the more accurate answer. Incidentally, it must be removed to extract the shift rod, should you have a need to have it out. Also, if you put an oil cooler or AC condenser behind the Super Beetle "grill", the bash-crash plate will be in the way and will need to be permanently removed.

Edit: I see everything I said was covered in previous post. Let's just say I'm confirming what was said.
