I am trying to repair the ripped up interior panel on the slider of my late 1986...

It's been a long while gluing pieces of aluminum sheet onto the rear masonite, and I've forgotten what was supposed to go in the hole (now a rip) indicated by the arrow:

It's in that indentation where the rubber sheet on the body covers up part of the door.

Here's a closeup:

Here is the inside of the slider itself (heavily insulated with sound treatments):

Thx

Comparing this photo with the one of the panel, there doesn't seem to be anything for the interior panel to fasten to...

the big hole is for access to an adjustment bolt; the small one is too small for a plastic snap fastener and may have been added by a PO??

I just did this on this on my 86 and it has a screw with the brown plastic cap on it. I belive it just helps to pull the panel in towards the door.
Hope that helps.

I got tired of that exact spot sometimes catching the door striker as the slider opened and simply ran a self tapping sheetmetal screw in. Unscrewed it and put a washer in, then tightened it. On mine there was no fastener at the exact spot one is needed as its a disaster if your trim panel hooks and someone just yanks the door open. Should have been one stock right there. I wouldn't hesitate 60 seconds to do this again.

A screw with a washer under it covered by a plastic cap goes there

I bought a used Trim Panel for my '84, I'm betting the previous damage on it was from exactly as you state, panel leaned out and got caught by the door on the Vanagon it came off of.
I added 2 Oval Head Black Trim Screws and the matching black metal dished washers for them in two places on the end of my panel near that repaired section.

BMW used the screws and the washers on their 70's and 80's interiors, so I've got a supply lying around from those days. They hold well, and the washer spreads the clamping load out a bit to prevent damage
