Cannot believe it has been 2 weeks since I last posted! Time flies when you go back to working, when no one else is! We had to get a 2 bedroom house ready to sell. Really odd working when no one else is. Good thing, because no one pays me anything to sit home!

Not much has happened. I have been studying the rear wheel wells. I need to replace, at minimum, the passenger side. Really badly rusted. If I look at it wrong, a hole appears! So, I went ahead and ordered some inner wheel well body panels for, “46 - 68” beetle. Believe it or not, they are not all the same, through that 22 year stretch. And now I know, first hand, that this 54 is like no later Bug (55 and on) that I have worked on, in this area. It is different. The entire curve is different and there is no flattened part towards the front.

What needs replacing;
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The new panel held up;

That is a lot of work! But the car is too low, and I have grown tired of working hunched over. So instead of cutting, bracing and removing metal, I instead built a higher dolly!

Now I can roll under the body, while sitting on my stool!

Next weekend, I will get the wheel well replaced!

You are rolling right along.

It looks like we are in for this isolating for a while yet so I am think I may bring my welder home and work on the fender repairs. I need to progress something as you are leaving me in the dust Jimmy!

Glad to see you back at it, Jim! When you went silent I was beginning to worry that COVID had it's grip on you. Glad you were just 'working'. Smile

Ah, well, um, no I disagree. I feel like I have been dragging my feet for 19 pages! But I do appreciate your enthusiasm and optimism! Makes me want to go out and work on the car! I am just finally getting to a point that I can breathe around this car and nothing (not even a rust flake) falls off of it! I think you got me beat!

I need to get these back fender wells, bumper mounts and apron repaired. Then onto the dome light area, where it started to buckle when the heater channel gave. Then the top portion of the B pillar on the passenger side. Then back to the front, to repair the hood seal up at the seal channel and wiper holes. Then onto the doors - complete lower 6 inches removed and replaced, except for the hinges. Then the front package tray, which is still coming to me as a front clip. So I will need to drill that apart, repair the panel I need (it has a lot less rust than my current one), then on to the dings and dents! I am just getting started!!!

Thanks Ron! Its so pretty!

Nice progress Very Happy seems like more you work at it the more you find needing fixed. Glad you found a clip Ron has great prices and enough donors to fix any odd beetle rust! That was neat that the quarter windows match windshield corners.

Yah, I was surprised when I found that the window frame curves were very close to the same. Saved me a lot of time and aggravation. Plus I had the extra material left from the rear clip I purchased for the luggage shelf! Win win win!

Thanks for looking in on me and commenting!

I'm sure with the dash clip you'll find the extra pieces to be handy too just like the shelf clip. It's interesting how these cars all seem to rust similarly but so different. Like my luggage shelf is solid but other random spots aren't.

No problem keep up.the good work

Yes it is! It barely misses the garage door opener, by design. I was going to make it taller, but that was the lowest point, so, that’s were it landed!

So, yesterday I was out in the garage for roughly 3 hours. Decided to start pulling panels off of the rear of the car to get to the wheel wells.

If you ever wondered how they disassemble on the back side, here’s your chance.

The starting point.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I love being able to stand and work on a car! I feel like a human, instead of a knuckle dragger. I know I will be dragging my knuckles again, soon. But it just feels so good, standing up while drilling out several dozen spot welds! Enough chatting, let’s get to work, because nothing gets done if we talk!

Took the good old 4-1/2 grinder and removed as much of the totally shitty chicken shit welds someone did, from years ago. Look at that stuff, looks like someone tried making a sand castle with a welder!

Then up to the inside, again, crappy welds.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then went to grind off the drivers top weld - there was nothing there. The passenger side was there, but barely, so I wiggled it off!

And thar she be matey!
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I will need to convert that dog shit back into a usable piece of car panel.

Here is what I am looking at, now. I need to remove the engine bay shelves and the lower firewall. So, let’s go searching for spot welds to drill out. Did I mention how awesome it is to not work while hunched over!
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Did you guys notice all the rust flakes on the floor! I should have kept my mouth shut a few weeks ago!

Look at the tail portion, on the inside of the rear fender well panel.

The shelf! Let’s get to drilling.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The other one.

Not as bad as the drivers side, but still bad.

Started drilling.

Might as well get the lower firewall loose.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then the drivers side.

Out! Not in bad shape. I can bead blast that and reinstall it.

Passenger shelf.

That was not to bad, but I already got new ones from Mika!

And with that, a shot not many see.......

I then wanted to see how that “new to me” luggage shelf fit.

Perfect fit!

Now, I need to sand blast a few areas. Spray some weldable primer. Cut and fit a few panels. Then, I can start pasting the rear end back together.

Oh, and yes, it did get hit in the rear end! Passenger’s side. There is a slight buckle right in front of the reinforcement plate, on the Driver’s side, so the hit was from about a 60 degree hit off of the back fender area. Not a hard hit, but enough to bend stuff! Barely visible. I will need to massage this a little bit.

Until later!

That’s 3 hours! Helps with it up in the air. Big difference. Plus I had made a plan before hand. Been looking at it for 3 weeks!

Thank you! It would be wrong to take a welded together car and fill it full of foam. I was talking with John of Grumphy’s Metals this morning about his ragtop kits. He said that with the latest adhesives you can pretty much cut and glue in one of his ragtop conversion kits. I told him that was not for me. He also is going to set me up to go by his shop here in HB and let me check out a 3 fold unit they are installing into a (I think he said) 57. Really cool guy! If he holds true to what he has told me, I will most likely be purchasing one of his ragtop conversion kits! Hope it is as good a product as I have read about!

Stay tuned. I got some more done on the car today but still need to write it all out!

Here goes another 4 hours! Had to take care of paperwork. I absolutely hate paper work. But, I got to play out in the garage afterwards!

Starting point.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Found a crack in the body. Thinking the car got hit fairly good, then got pulled back. Then they welded in some pieces. They missed this one.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Went through the new rear panels. Had to remove the bumper mount. Look, no primer!
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Laid out my cuts.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Look at how crappy the inside looks like!
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Checking out how the panel sits.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Drawn on, measured and ready to be cut.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And here it is, cut out and laying on the new panel.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Onto cutting the panel. I oversized the initial cut by about a 1/2 inch on each side. Then slowly, maybe a 1/8 inch at a time, remove little segments, till the exact shape and size are finally created!
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

See the new scribe line. That the small amount I need to remove to get a closer fit.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And then again. I think this time, I filed off a few strokes worth.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And here it is, clamped onto the Bug.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Welded it into the Bug. Ground the welds down. Softened them up with some 36 grit paper. Primed it.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

One down, one to go!

I had them install a kit in my 54. I was a little apprehensive at first but now that it is all done I am very happy with it. It had been a great addition.

Seriously - right! When I looked the car over at the time of purchase, I obviously was not seeing straight. I get all fuzzy headed when buying rusty cars. All I can think about is saving it from the scrap pile. In hind sight, I should have walked away or offered less. Oh well, split milk. Now, just gotta “make the best of this task and don’t t ask why?”. Love that song! Words to live by. (Green Day, Good Riddance.”

Thank you for the props! That along with others here, helps keep the spirit up. Because finding another area of rust kind of drags one down. I mean, I knew it was there but damn, another one....ahhhhhh! Then, another one!....etc. etc......

If it is “rusty gold”, —- I am! And it’s definitely a ring. More like a vicious circle. Find rust. Cut out rust. Grind around area to receive a patch. Naval Jelly everything within reach, while area is assessable. Cut and tack in new steel. Grind welds. Sand welds. Etch prime new steel. Move onto next spot.

Repeat.

I am laughing while writing this! Loving it. I am further along than I had anticipated being, so really no complaints right now. Still just loving life!
