Hi all.

I doubt the damping or muffling material inside the damper would get so clogged that it would block air flow but I now see how the damper as a unit could easily be ignored until it falls apart or develops a possibly hard to see crack which would allow unmetered air into intake.

I was (I hope), dealing with an intermittent idle and hot start issue. In relocating the ISV to what I hope is a cooler environment in the engine bay (away from exhaust manifold; I'd wondered if heat was adversely affecting the valve operation), I deleted the ISV damper in the process. So far, idle seems ok and I can't recreate the hot start issue. I could still blow air through the damper though. I'll closely inspect the seam for cracks.

At first listen, engine, or intake, seemed louder w/o the damper installed.

Neil.

edit: these images are not of my engine ISV damper.

Relatively clean ISV damper material but obviously failed housing:

ISV damper material from different engine, obviously oil soaked. (and heat damaged??)

The damper (32) is post ISV

I did a quick leak check of the two dampers I have on hand. Neither appeared to leak. Not certain which one was installed on the engine with intermittent issue, so that doesn't help but.....

One damper had material in the inlet tube that connects to ISV outlet, the other had no visible material at all. Both have the same part number. I doubt the slightly reduced air flow was causing the issue but who knows? EVAP purge valve operation aside, all idle air is controlled by the ISV and passes through this part to intake.

Neil.

damper material. It could move up down the inlet tube. I could still blow air through each damper but I could feel a difference in air flow resistance between these two dampers.

In the first post, damper material appears to wrap around one tube and possibly cover the other but in this part, I don't see any material in either tube.
