Somewhere I have read that early working class buses had painted hubcaps except for dove blue buses that had chrome. I rechecked Eccles and Meredith's texts but nothing specific. Anyone know where I have seen this in print or am I just dreaming? Thanks

The early buses had chrome and the 59 and later I believe had painted code L345 light grey.

Here's some more info ... chrome hubcaps were available on 211, 231, and 261's at extra cost. All dove blue (L31) vehicles had "dove grey" (L249) colored hubcaps. Other, non-dove blue vehicles, had the L345 light gray caps. If anyone has an original painted L249 cap, can you get it scanned at a DuPont, PPG or Glasurit paint dealer? We could all use a formula for L249.

I have about 15 painted caps. about half of them are presentable and a few of them are really nice. a freind of mine who owns a body shop had my nicest one scanned when he painted the caps for his '67 doublecab. I'll ask him which paint shop scanned it and see if they still have the formula. otherwise, you would be welcome to borrow it and get it scanned.

I know, painted caps look so much better than chrome caps on commercial models.

Has anyone ever stripped the primer off of a primer cap and then taken a photo? I would like to see whats under there. Obviously raw metal, but just curious.

wouldn't you have to strip the paint off first before the primer? if you are really interested, I have a crappy painted cap that you can strip.

the paint is shiny if you buff it out.

Lind, could I borrow 1 of those original paint caps from a dove blue vehicle to scan? I appreciate your help and it would be nice to finally have a formula for L249. OCTO? See you there.

Are you saying I have the wrong hubcaps on the Jan 58 DD panel from Idaho? The ones we found with it were orange over the og grey, and I had one or two grey caps to complete the set.

I was wrong on that. I previously believed what I had read in PR about them, but since then, I have seen enough examples of original '58 buses with painted hubcaps that I now believe that '58 was the first year of painted hubcaps, although I don't have enough information to tell if it was a model year change. the boise panel was not a strong source because it has quite a few miles on it and has been repainted twice and has plnety of miles on it, but it did generally support my hypothesis. (dented hupcaps are something that could likely get replaced when a bus is getting painted. lower miles unmolested buses are stonger evidence) I would have changed my old posts to reflect the new information, but they are more than 1500 minutes old.

I love finding old threads that have all but died and doing a bit of CPR to revive them....Lets say i have a 1956 double door panel and i am buying caps.... sounds like i need chrome ones even though primer is romantic and grey looks cooler and chrome is OG....did i get that correct? Cause i have one and I'm buying some.... Wink
