Apologies in advance for this whiny post. Trying to figure out what to do.
Have to sell my 72 squareback to pay for vanagon. Long story -retiring, too many vehicles, etc. Squareback is in really pretty good condition but would need rear interior panels, front carpet to make interior look really sharp. Cost for both is going to be about $600. Also got a couple of rust spots -not big, could be sanded, etched, primed and repainted. More time than money for that.
Sell as-is or fix? Are people really getting the prices I'm seeing in classifieds? |

Fixing before selling is usually only worth it if you think this kind of work is fun.
Hard to recoup your costs of just parts.. Never mind labor.
Look at the date some of these ads were placed,
And that will tell you plenty about if people get the kind of money they -think- they'll get.

Sell it as is.

How about a few photos in your gallery...sell it as is where is. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

On the work you mentioned I wouldn't do that - sell it as-is
I don't think this is the case here but:
If it's not running/driving/stopping that work is worth doing.
A car that can be driven around while cosmetics are being done is worth a lot more than something parked and has to be towed away _________________ How to Post Photos

Agreed! Any need for cosmetic fixes are readily apparent to the potential buyer, so they can bound their expense. Of course, cleanliness is a different matter, lack of which and indicated neglect which can lower the price significantly.
Exception: if you have a buddy who will fix the rust really cheap (or if you can), that might be worth it because then buyers lacking those skills can enter the bidding, but otherwise will walk away.
On the other hand, if it can't be driven a buyer will have to assume engine and tranny are toast, and offer accordingly. Maybe the engine runs shitty, but as long as it runs, the tranny and brakes can be verified. But without it running, expect a lowball offer that assumes the need for major work on all three. They will not take your word that "it ran fine when parked." |

Yup, Agreed 100%. Make sure it runs, drives, and stops. Fix any lights that don't work. Then sell it as is where it is. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks for all the info. I think I'll do the interior because it's pretty easy and makes a big difference in how it looks. And leave the paint work for someone with more experience. It does run though, lights, beeper, motor, etc.
