I am wondering if the plugs in my motor are the correct heat range. I bought this car (1966 Bug) with a professionally built motor a couple of years ago. The overall details of the motor are as follows:

2276cc capacity w/9.5:1 compression ratio
Heads: CB Performance 44/37.5 valves w/dual springs & ratio rockers
Cam: Engle FK8
Chromoly push rods
Dual 44mm Webers
Pertronix ignition in 009 distributor
Electronic fuel pump w/3lbs delivery pressure

The plugs that came in the motor are NGK D7EA. I was wondering if it would run better with a hotter heat range plug. The plugs do not look too bad (fouled) just a little dark. The motor stumbles a little bit until I do an Italian tune on it then it cleans up. It gets a little annoying in stop and go driving. I would ask the builder, but I've relocated.

I'm using NGK BPC5ES plugs in a 2180 with FK-8 and 9.5:1cr.

So my heat range is a 6 while yours is a 7 so you're is colder.

"5" is the stock heat range.

I'm running a D6EA on a similar engine and have no problems. The D7EA where marginal, as if I missed while tuning would foul. So I'd say go hotter if you tuning requires.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to give the D6EA's a try and see if that cleans up the stutter. If not, I'll probably fiddle with the jets a bit.

I think it means you stomp on it repeatedly until it complies.
