I had a similar problem. I had my Weber IDAs rebuilt and everything was fine. I was on the first drive and I felt a loss of power, so I quickly got home. I found the needle valve was stuck on the right carb. I used a fresh can of brake parts cleaner and it freed up. I reinstalled and never had another problem. If that's keeping you from driving, you can give it a try. |
Thank Glenn. The interior is completely gutted — I have no driving plans.
I did poke a small pin in the hole and it got better but it still sticks.
I will get a new one either from Tim or some parts store. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Tim got back to me last night and said all those check valves do that if you push them in with your finger. He suggested pushing it and and twisting it a bit. I did that and it got much better. I could still get it to stick but not as strongly and for the most part gravity pulled it down.
Put it back in the carburetor this morning and buttoned it down. Reattached the coil to the distributor as well as the ground cable. After looking at it a bit to make sure everything looked right. I gave it a shot.
Strong turnover, no start.
Strong turnover, no start.
Poured a bit of gas into the carburetor and closed down my new manual choke.
It started!
It ran!
Sounded a bit harsh, opened the choke a bit and it calmed down.
Turned it off and checked the oil (which I do often). Looked a bit low so added a bit (things are leaking left and right under the car with it up at an angle— still haven’t put it down since installing the choke as I wanted to test it fully before doing so).
Started up again immediately, running very nicely!
People, I just installed a choke cable, a 28 PCI carburetor and matching distributor, and troubleshot a sticky check valve— successfully!
Even my wife was impressed! _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

My car's coming along. It is all painted as of Friday, but I want the doors, engine lid, and trunk lid back on before unveiling the "new" look. _________________ Marc

Figured that was your problem.
I thought I pointed this out earlier, but those replacement check valves are notorious for sticking. When I rebuild carbs I always use the old ones, never the new ones.
Ask him if has any originals, if not PM me your address and I’ll mail you one. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Yes, you did Brau!
I now see that my problem was I didn’t know what a check valve was at the time!

Lest you think I am running low on things to do:
Tried it out on the accelerator sleeve— what a cool tool!
Also installed a battery disconnect switch to make wire replacement and testing easier.

Looks so nice for the most part on the inside, thinking about just removing the little bit of loose paint, doing rust treatment, and leaving the inside au natural. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Good start with the battery cover. You saw from the other cover in the 2-unit ad, that those 2 triangular tabs hold a fiber-based liner which acts as a non-conductive insulator so that the battery terminals don't short circuit against the metal cover.
Bench grinder/wire wheel is among my most utilized tools. Good practice to wear full-width goggles or a face shield in case debris or a brush strand gets knocked loose and flies upward.
Next step: In the upside-down shot, you can see that the turned-out metal edges have some rust pockmarks. You can carefully file those edges flat back to good metal with a metal file. Sand the upper, visible surfaces of the turned-out edges with 120 grit to knock down the rust craters. Spray the entire cover with rust converter. Let dry. Spray self-etch primer to seal the bare metal, or Rust-O-Leum rusty metal primer. 220 wet sand. Then the sandable primer/filler. Wet sand with 320, then 2 light coats of semi-gloss black. |

Yes, I have the liner and it looks serviceable. That’s why the inside looks good!
Thanks for the instructions— let see how I might screw them up! _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

If it is the original one it will be made of tar and fibre. You can make it like new just by heating it up so the tar melts. A hot air gun will do that well enough without a naked flame setting things alight. With the heat you can remove kinks and creases and also re-establish that dark black colour.

I'm intrigued; why would anyone do that to the dash support, I can't think of anything that would require that modification?? _________________ Cheers,
