We have a found squareback here...it's not been driven for at least 21 years. Let's see what we can do with it...
OK, let's see here...
I'm gonna have to fix that:
...and that...
...and that too:
How about the interior?
The engine looks....like an engine
The headliner looks good!
The dash and such looks pretty good too.

The front pans are good enough to refinish...
The spot just forward of the engine doesn't look good.
Overall, she is in really decent shape!

Loading her up to take to the shop where I plan to have her rolling down the road in 3 months. You can laugh now at my obvious hubris.
...and here she is at the shop. These photos were taken nearly one year ago today. I laugh at 3 months and demand 18! Haha
Lots of progress has been made in the last 12 months, however ...here we go... |

We found that we could use a bit more room than one bay at the shop so the owner kindly moved some stuff and we have two bays now. Sweet.
From the left, that's Stacy, Brian, and Dave. Only Dave is part of the project.
The above photos are from September 2018. The following are from January 2019. Bit of a stall there. So, what to do first? Whatever my photos tell me was done first as I can't remember...
Looks like brakes!
Ah, that's much better

Here I'm working on the body under the fenders:
...as well as the pan:
We're about to address the rusted section behind the back seat. Here it is cleaned up and with a coat of POR-15:

It's morning in June of this year and someone is going somewhere and is getting a bath first...
That's Dave with the pressure washer
Rolling up on her $300 round trip journey. Living on an island makes things expensive...
Arrived at the fabrication shop!

We're here!
We have several things we need to do here - mainly fix a bunch of fender and body issues along with taking care of that spot behind the back seat.
We've got a plate for it but it has a notch cut on the edge and is missing some necessary cutouts.
Dave is repairing the cut:
Walk into the light (and light your cigarette)...

Thankfully Dave has the equipment needed for everything.
Meanwhile, Linda is working on some interior panels:
... and some grinding while Dave welds the plate:
Other welding was necessary like covering up this likely speaker hole:
... and repairing the battery tray:
... and fixing up some fenders...

With all of that finished up, we headed back to the shop only to find this being delivered:
Naturally, it came with the prerequisite boxes of parts...
... as well as an interesting looking engine...

As of late June, the car is back at the shop and we're running out of room again. That's ok, it's a big place. The owner moved this truck out...
Thankfully he's got a tractor...
... and a turkey
We are now taking up 3 bays.
Moving Linda's new ride "Betty"...
Betty will hang with Linda's other VW, Giblet until we can start work on her:

I have 15 fenders here at one time. Here is a pallet of undesirables...
The engine has to come out to make way for the 914...
Shown here is the auto trans which I am replacing with a manual...
This engine is completely unknown so we're going to go over her, fix anything needed and then she is destined for Betty...

The air compressor here is not going to cut it for sanding and painting so the owner gladly installed all of this:
Rust. Whatever.
The frunk is looking good...

So this car is an automatic and I'm really not into it so I drove 5 hours to meet up with Joel to pick up a manual subframe...
How to get said subframe out of the truck? A tractor of course!
Dave says WASSUP!
Prepping the frame for paint and removing all the bits that need to be replaced - which are already installed on the other subframe so a bit of swapping here.
Time to paint:
OK, who is the fancy making tape type around here?!

Regarding the transmission, I found one locally. I do need some assistance converting from auto to manual. I have a thread going already but I think I need a bit more info.

My chassis does not have the clutch cable conduit in the tunnel so I could use some help rigging a hydraulic clutch actuator. Also, how to alter the ignition wiring with no neutral lockout.
