I watched that video before. It's funny that when he popped a breaker, the whole thing came down on itself. I'd build a light weight frame (PVC piping) to put inside if I ever used one.

Here we are over a year later with some updates!

For the exhaust filters, I ended up making this insert placed under the large bay door:

In the end, it wasn't enough airflow. I would increase the fan count to 6 units next time.

The paint color I chose is semi-transparent so I painted everything black first to ensure a nice dark and dramatic end color.

On the quality of the paint job... Despite my 15 years of experience with auto paint, I made a number of errors at critical times.

The why of this is I have been diagnosed with a neurological disease. It causes Alzheimer's-like symptoms. This caused me to miss steps and just plain screw things up.

In the end, the paint quality is a 5 foot job. Stand at least 5 feet away and it looks great lol.

Everything is fixable of course but I don't plan on it at this time. I am more interested in getting the mechanicals squared away (pun intended!) first.

The next major step is to excise the tunnel from a donor manual transmission car and add the essentials to my car...

The paintwork was finished in June of 2020. After several days of drying in the shop, I put a breathable car cover on her and parked her in a carport on the property next to where she was painted.

Below is her first daylight since then. We need to get the car to Dave's shop for more cutting and welding.

We are attempting to set up a tow bar in this first photo only to find it's only for a type 1. No problem, the neighbor had a trailer that we borrowed...

There is a trick to this, build a filter box behind the fan, not just one on the back of the fan. It will flow a ton more air. I go with two pushing and two pulling.

You probably could have cut a couple of windows into the side of the AT pan tunnel to allow installing the clutch cable (Clatter has some great pics of the inside of the tunnel toward the beginning of his build thread), as that's what's missing from the AT pan. I would have also gotten some measurements for the shift rod coupler cut out as well, since you'll need to make an access point for it (under the car).
Just some random thoughts that might save you some work.

The paint and color looks good. I really wouldn't worry about it too much, as it's now all sealed up (the main thing). You can always adjust it when it's warm again. Wink

And yes, I'm not a painter, but rather a welder/fabricator but some people seem to think I'm a painter. Laughing

Maybe this pic will help with the line placement in the tunnel.

Anywho, Bob, thank you for the diagram of the tube! It's been useful! And yeah, we're gonna need to figure out how to make a proper access panel for the shift coupler when that time comes! Thanks for the heads up/reminder! It's easy to forget stuff when you're deep into hacking and fitting! 😁😉
It's for a 67 though, so you'll be a fuel line short for FI.


Hey y'all sorry it's been so long since I've posted anything, but life threw me a wicked curve ball. But I'm back now, and ready to DUB! So I've been doing what I can to help Sean work this 69 into something awesome, and since my work was awesome enough to let me use the shop, we've got a LOT done! But there's still more to go! Well, I figured the tube placement might help out, since your AT pan WILL need the clutch tube installed. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=581759 Towards the bottom of page 5, Steve has the bottom of the tunnel opened up showing all the lines and brackets inside. This might help with the placement (and how the bracket is built) for the clutch cable tube. At the top of page 6, is the rear exit for the clutch tube. Note; he's moving the tube to the right, or is it left for more clearance for the 5 speed he's putting in. He does have some nice clean pics of the tube bracketry though.
Just don't mind all the other stuff he's doing in the pics, as he's got a bunch of fab work for his 5 speed conversion going on (using a Porsche trans).

Okie dokie y'all, it,s been a VERY productive, and AMAZING 2nd weekend at the shop! Sean, Brandon and I have been very busy preparing painting fitting and welding out this tunnel!

We even made a new friend when our new Navy buddy Brandon (our new aircooled buddy), invited Lance over to the shop. Lance is a really cool kid (19 years old) who's going through the welding program at the local college here. He was a welcomed addition as I was able to "tap out" when my neck/spine/EVERYTHING became sore as hell from all the kneeling, grinding, and welding. Getting old sucks y'all! 😉Thanks lance! Nice welds, and awesome attitude! 😁

Yeah Bob, after all of this work, I can see why people just swap pans! BUT, that wouldn't be as exciting though, would it? 😋 and I must admit, despite the extra work, caused by unknown factors (like how the tube was fabricated at the factory and time constraints at the shop), it was an overall SUCCESS!

Additionally, Friday night, on the way home from the shop, traffic was insane! As a result, Sean got side swiped in his 67 bug (Giblet) by some A$$H0LE who was splitting lanes in a white 15 passenger van! Both Sean and Giblet are ok, but sucks that the accident happened because somebody was in a hurry and was as equally careless! Oh well, at least everybody is ok!

So, we had some "accidental" depth issues while initially cutting the original automatic transmission tube out. One of of friends got a little over zealous while initially cutting! So some of the line got cut. 😲🙄 oh well. So, our answer was to use a fitting to piece the clutch tube halves back together! We also sleeved the fuel line halves and tested them for air tightness.

Nex up is some other little projects done while we were waiting on fitting, weld out, or just needed something different to do for a minute! Sean painted his pedal cluster, and I cleaned up and painted his heater box control levers. I painted to air direction black, and the heater box lever red, because Sean keeps forgetting wich lever does what! 😆😋 problem solved!
