Yes I know there is a 300 page sticky on tires, but all I want to know is on a stock 14" rim, stock height bus what is the tallest mudder I dare put on that wont rub in front?
Any recommendations on make and model of tire?
Thanks
Matt

The largest I've seen on a 14in wheel is 27/8.5/r14. I'm sure others have used larger. I run 195/75/r14 BFG All Terrains. I haven't put any miles on them yet but most people seem to like them.

I don't go off-road, but have driven through some pretty big dips and potholes in my '71 Single Cab. I run 215/75R14 tires with plenty of travel room. I have hit bumps so hard that the front end came off the ground and have never rubbed tires.

I wish all these metric tire sizes had a standard conversion printed on them. Who the hell measures tires by percentages and can visualize sizes based on that crap? I need to see the amount in a known quantity we call "inches" for criminy's sake! Surprised

Here's a couple of pic's of my beater westy. It's completely stock with 27-8.50-14 General Grabber A/T 2's. I've twisted it pretty hard offroad and they've never rubbed. I don't think I could go any bigger though.

Perfect! Now there is a size I can visualize and I don't need to know any formulas of calculation in order to know the actual measurement of the height of the tire.

For me it is impossible to see the size in my mind unless it is shown as an actual measurement because I was a Montessori schooled kid. I didn't learn math like everyone else, we used colored blocks and tubes full of beads and abacus's to learn math. Laughing

I went 15 inch alloys with BF Goodrich AT 215 R75 and spacers in the back on my stock bay last year.

However ended up with buying a syncro as well, so those tires are now 4wd snowdrifting on mercedes steel wheels in the Norwegian mountains Wink

You poor, retarded, bastard.

I heard about those places, paste was the breakfast food of choice. :p

I had one of those high end public educations.

Largest you can fit at stock height are 215/75/15. Next size up is 225/75/15 but those scrape the wheel arch on the rear.

To this this day numbers have colors in my mind, that's why sevens will always be green to me. Laughing

Of course the ET of the wheel is the critical question.

From Ratwell.com...

"71-79 buses (with disc brakes) have normal looking wheels with a 5x112 bolt pattern. The rims are 5 1/2" wide (14 x 5.5J is stamped in very tiny letters on the face under the hubcap) and the offset is ET39. ET is German and stands for Einpress Tiefe, a measurement in millimeters of the distance from the centerline of the rim to the back of the bolt face. A negative number would indicate that the bulk of the wheel is inward towards the body."

I will not claim this is the largest tire you can run with stock suspension, but I can confirm it is a large tire and has never rubbed on my bus. Most of my miles are on the 27x8.5 r14 tires. First set was the BF's, current set are the General Grabbers. Get them, you'll love them. Check out my pics.

What are those tires on your Westy? those have a sweet profile!
I realize you lifted it 2 1/2 " but what size are they and what is your opinion of max size in that tire at stock height?
Thanks
Matt
