Trying to figure out why my speedo Needle is stuck. Having taken the speedo apart is very stiff to move.
Doesn’t look too much fun to start dismantling further so is there something obvious I’m missing.
Speedo has never worked since I owned the car.
Thanks

So...what exactly have you taken apart? Really there is only one place to tart taking one apart...and that is prying the bezel ring off...carefully.
So are you feeling resistance when you turn the input shaft section? Show us a picture of that please.
Its possible...have had a similar problem before...that there is a small amount of corrosion or grit or damage to the cable input coupling and its dragging on the body. A small amount of oil there or cleaning may help but show us a picture first please. Ray |

This may sound foolish, but if it hasn't worked since you owned the car is the speedometer cable connected to the front wheel? |

Thanks Ray
I took the bezel off without damaging it and gained access to the needle. Then removed the 3 rear screws to see inside but I’m not really sure what I’m looking for. Needle was stuck at 10mph and I can move it but it stays where you put it.
I put a square bit into the speedo cable socket and there’s more resistance than the bug speedo I compared it to. The needle doesn’t move at all When turned using the bit in the speedo cable socket.
Speedo cable is fine. I have a spare KM/H speedo I’ve tested in the car.
Here’s two pics.

Cable is good. Tested with a spare Km/h speedo.
Plus needle was stuck above the stop. |

Ok...as long as you have a spare...let this one sit for a while and dont turn it anymore. I have a box of them and will look inside to see what could be locked up thats repairable and get back to this. Ray |

Hi
I think the mistake comes from one or more broken plastic gears.
These will become porous and crumble after all these years.
Give it to a good gaugedoctor to fix it. _________________ Gerold

Thanks. The KM clock isn’t ideal but it’ll work for now.
If it’s nothing simple I’ll send it off to a specialist here in the U.K. |
