I should probably be horse whipped for doing this but these cores have been stored outdoors for about 7 years just as pictured. The one with black trash bag is 1970 B block only rebuilt once since new. The other is an H block, both are 1600cc. I’m going to be tearing them down to see what is salvageable

Any guesses on what we’ll find, water damage etc. the 70 engine ran but smoked, the H motor was making a ticky tick noise when I shut it down. If nothing else there’s sheet metal and hardware, but who knows.

I bet one of the cylinders has water in it.

I just tore a locked engine down and found #3 was rusted solid. I took a sledgehammer to the jug and the bottom spun freely.

Take pictures as you go, I like the gore. Laughing

What's the point of putting them on blocks?

I like the chances of the one with the cooler on it, especially if it had plugs in all 4 cylinders.

At least they are not sitting in the mud. The heater boxes would be gone by now.

Prevent water damage to the bottom of the case?

You might need new pistons and liners.

And some discs for the angle grinder to separate the old ones...

Do you already know that they are locked up?
It is not impossible that there is no damage.

I think you did that just for fun. You could have soaked those and gotten them out without damage.

Why bother, you're not going to reuse them.

You can be sure I did that because nothing else worked. Cylinder #1&2 barely came off with a puller but there the pistons were not rusted on the whole circumference. On Cyl #3&4 they were.
Anyway they weren't reusable before I destroyed them.
I assume that this engine sat for several decades with improper storage conditions.

I got pistons and liners in mint condition from an industrial engine (portable water pump from fire department with only 86 hours of operation). So the engine will be fine again now.

On the other hand, nearly 30 years ago when we were kids, there was a 71 Type 3 that was used as a shed for garden tools for more than 10 years. We arrived there with a battery and five liters of gas and were able to start the engine after we connected the jerrycan to the fuel pump.
So maybe the motors above may not be in such a bad condition assumed that the carburetors were covered and the spark plugs were installed.
