The glovebox on our '71 Super won't stay shut. I assumed the latch was the culprit:

...but on closer inspection the steel it latches to may be the problem.

My guess is that te best way to fix this would be to remove the plastic, grind the area down, and weld a little more steel on there.
Can anyone suggest a simpler solution?

Yep, that'd do it.

Guy earlier this year had the same problem - https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=713828
He used a pop-rivet and a small scrap of metal to patch it.

Alternatively, the latch on my '70 is busted so I'm using a neodymium bar magnet behind the dash, works fine.

The plastic latch also looks worn.

I'm pretty sure there is a metal clip on mine at that point not just the metal of the glove box.

Thanks for the link -- I did not find this in my searches.

Thanks for this suggestion, too. I've flattened the remaining steel out a little more, and adding a fresh latch to the equation could make the difference.

If anyone has a photo of this metal clip, I'd be very interested to see it. Thanks to all.

Did you try loosening the hinge screws on the door and adjusting it up a little? Mine was always popping open and when I removed the dash pad I adjusted the door and now it stays.

Thanks for the image. My vision isn't 100%, but that looks like it's just dash steel and not a clip to me.

I did not, and that's a great idea. Thanks!

It is just the dash. Just a tab stamped into it. Depends how pretty you want, but a patch pop riveted in would do the trick. You can put it in and if too tight, just bend it a little.
