Working on replacing the tie rods on the steering rack. Manual shows putting the inner rack bar into a vice and tightening tie rod. I'm concerned about scaring the bar because it goes through a seal.

I'm considering using the one side(s) tie rod nut(s) to be the counter force to tighten the other. In that case, does the 51ft/lb that each side is speced for remain 51 or does it double to 102?

I'm thinking it stays at 51.

Thoughts/advice?

It stays at 51, the total twisting moment is still felt by both threads.

By the way, I see people doing steering rack jobs where they wish to retain their toe settings but they loosen the outer threaded portion of the tie rods. It's better to simply pull back the boots and unscrew the inner tie rod balljoints from the rack, then there is no change to the toe on reassembly, and wrangling the rack out and back in is much easier too.

Thanks re (area?) 51 Wink!

good hint on the ball joint remove...considered that and since I'm also installing Altec's? Silicone boots the tie rod ends had to come off anyway.

....and I don't care if I nudge the toe since I have Lifetime alignment at Firestone...almost 20 years now...and /most/ of the time they do a good job.

Don’t put too much faith in a torque reading. Error is typically 25%

It’s much better to learn the feel of a properly torqued fastener , except for critical things like bearing journals, etc,

Let the Force Torque be with you.

Point's moot anyway, you can't put a torque wrench on the inner joints, unless you have a 28mm crow's-foot (as I recall the size, could be 30mm) and know how to do the correction. Just tighten them good and fuckin' tight, and knock down the edge on the retainer washer.

I was just answering the more abstract question of opposed fasteners, which was by itself a good one.

correct on both...I was just wondering if I need to go double ape!

FWIW, I used a pipe wrench to take them off. will look for proper size open end other wise pipe wrenching it back on.

...OOH, here is a solution https://www.protorquetools.com/13-38-mm-pipe-head-...2IEALw_wcB

..and interestingly the replacement rack doesn't have the locking tab notches so I'll grind some in before installing the tie rods.
