This picture was recently published in the latest issue of the UK Historic Volkswagen Club magazine. It was submitted by my good friend Brian Screaton (I hope he doesn’t mind me posting it here) and shows a two-tier train loaded with a number of newly built Standard Splits, plus one Deluxe model at the rear in October 1952. Notice anything unusual about the Deluxe?

it has the later 'zwitter' style bumper and lacks side trim strips? is it a 'special' standard for canada or someplace?

I see chrome hubcaps and a chrome oval window bumper, but aside from that I don't see any other deluxe items. no belt line trim and it almost appears the decklid handle and door handle are not chrome?

and still a popes nose and flat split taillights (not hearts), combined with a Zwitter chrome bumper ! Shocked
also no trim on rear window seals.

If this car was found today everybody would call it a hack.
very interesting !

That rear bumper looks pretty twisted at the ends.

No disrespect to Mr. Screaton, but we do live in the era of Photoshop, and it's tough to trust anything you don't have the original print of.

Really cool pic.

Wild combination on this car...Standard model with Chrome bumpers and Chrome hubcaps. Bumper is newer Oval/Zwitter type but the car has 16"wheel, round taillights, popes nose.

As pointed out, Bumper appears to be angled upward at tips. Perhaps because its an early fitment/pre-production/prototype bumper

All other cars on the pic appear to be the split dash era standard models

Photoshop did cross my mind, but knowing Brian, that won't be the case. He's been an avid enthusiast and collector of VW literature, photographs etc for around 50 years and probably has one of the most significant collections worldwide.

2 minute photoshop change, not that Mr. Screaton doesn't have a photo, but

Just noticed... but when did they discontinue the crank brackets on the bumpers?

I don't think it's a Photoshop. The film grain is too good, you can tell it hasn't been doctored unlike the photo shopped one which when zoomed in on is very noticeable.

I notice that the standard bumper on the second car, top deck is also mounted so the ends curve upwards...

Correct. Export, rather than Dlx.
