I was at a swap meet last week searching around for some bits for my vair project as I rarely see VW pats at the meet up here and came across a pile of Popular Science magazines. I recall reading them when I was younger but not from the early 60s. As I was looking thru the Sep 61 issue, I saw an article on the 'new and bigger VW'. I turn the pages and wow! So I sat on the ground and began to read the article. After I was done, I paid my $.50 and kept searching. For those that like some history information from a test drive reporter type, enjoy...
I tried to pdf this but I'll send it to Everettb for posting in the Literature section as a whole document. Enjoy _________________ MonT3

Funny how they already g\had a concept for a sunroof. Most of the illustrations and pics were airbrushed. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Very nice!
Pre release that early....ie not really that early design wise. Pretty much from the start of modern complex automobile production.....designs that are largely brand new take right at five years.
It is STILL just about a five year design cycle. It just seems shorter now because car manufacturers work in CAD and 3D modeling so its a little faster...but it also allows them to use common components and sub assemblies in what is otherwise a brand new design....so there is a whole lot of tooling that does not have to be made new.
About the last 2 years of a design cycle are tooling being made simultaneously.
The VW 411.....which debuted in 1968 model year technically....had pre production models in 1967....and some components an prototyping in 1966. Most of the unseen work probably went on in 1964-65. The first model year was 1969. Ray |

I found the international 1962 car parade. It show the introduction of the VW 1500.

Interesting. Vw were denying this pretty strongly just before.
This is from a pile of internal VW documents that I came into. _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.
