"80-'83 vans with AC engines were attached to autos, so I don't see any reason why they can't be used in earlier bay vans. The later autos can also be used, but the 2.1L versions will need some kind of an external heat exchanger. _________________ Casey--

What year bay? From memory the late bays and the aircooled vanagon had a very similar install. That would be the easiest swap. _________________ ☮️ |

The vanagon air cooled automatic was geared taller than the later wbx auto. _________________ ☮️ |

I''m just finishing up putting the auto trans from an '81 into a '77 Bay Westfalia -- which is also a manual-to-automatic conversion for someone who can't drive stick anymore -- did the first test driving on the Bus yesterday.
Assuming a T4 engine, attaching the transmission to the engine is the easy part. You can use the flex plate and torque converter from the Vanagon (AC or WBX) and it all bolts together. Where it gets tricky is with the Bay-specific ancillary parts, if you don't already have them: the transmission mount, the CV axles, the throttle cable & bracket, the shifter, shifter linkage&cable&bracket, the AT filler/dipstick tube, the AT dipstick.
Some of those can be found new (CV axles, throttle cable), some of those can be worked around with fabrication or adapting the Vanagon part. The mount is really going to be the sticking point I think. Vanagon won't work and there's not a lot of room to work with for anything else... |
