The top handle doesn't clip into place as this photo of it might suggest. Whatever is supposed to keep the handle stowed is missing, but I have no reference for what it is or looks like. Mine flops around. I tried to search the gallery and posts but came up empty. Any insight on what kind of retaining clip or plastic doohickey is supposed to keep the top handle secured would be appreciated!

BTW, I diagnosed my non-crank issue as the starter itself. The solenoid clicks when engaged and released, which seems to rule out the ignition switch and solenoid. This happened with my '59 SO-23 6v Bosch starter and I was able to get it rebuilt locally. I guess if everything worked all the time, these vehicles might get a little boring? Razz

Nope, if it ever got boring, I just start looking for a different path.

Might help......
But sadly, it is one of those threads that almost finishes..... but not quite.
Maybe you can flesh it out and bring it to a conclusion?

Looking over at photos, your handle design is different than others shown.

Wonder if its been replaced at some point?

I noticed in one of the pictures that it looked like the Edmondson Ghia was parked in the background and your 66 Ghia has Oregon plates on it. Hmm...I think I might know the previous owner of your 66.

It's originally from the Portland area, so yes, Oregon tags. I have the names of all three prior owners. PM me and let's compare notes! I love hunting down PO's! (BTW, what's The Edmondson Ghia?)

Dunno. What pics or source are you referring to that shows the '66 handles you refer to as "others shown?" I'd like to check them out.

As I understand, the same lever was used from the late 50's through the top operation design change in 1969 1/2.

Interesting. I see a difference in the '67 knob shown in the link you posted earlier. My knob is slightly different. Gonna have to investigate this further.

Can you post a pic of your handle? There some discussion about original vs aftermarket. Thanks!

The Karmann Ghia parts book lists only one part number for the roof release lever up until mid 1969 when the design changed radically.

What I don't know is if listed number was a substituted newer number.
The design may have changed as the years slipped away but the new part functioned for the entire pre 1969 1/2 convertible production run.

this morning I pulled up the 1958 part manual. handle is part # 141 871 587

The part number from the 1972 part manual is #141 871 587
up to chassis # 149 431 007 which is mid 1969.

So, if they changed the design, they didn't change the part number, which would be unusual.

The part number starting with 141 indicates that this handle was designed for the convertible karmann ghia.

I also looked in the body manual (low light) and the top installation manual (later style) and consistently saw photos of the same style handle.
