Ted the '58 kombi

So after dreaming (friends would say obsessing) of owning a Splitty for nearly 26years, I am finally the proud owner of a 1958 kombi called Ted.

Have lots I want to do but the three main items are:
1. Get the tin worm underneath sorted
2. Lower it (currently has been raised 2.1/2inches)
3. Front disc brake conversion.

Currently at a local workshop called Workshop 77, I will keep you updated with progress and pictures as and when. Also any advise greatly welcomed.

Weird roof rack? Unless it's the angle.
It looks like someone made an HWE-style rack but made the sides much taller?

Had a preliminary report back from the guys at Workshopseventy7 and the tin worm is a little more serve than first thought. There are even sections that have been stuffed with tin foil!!!!


As for the raised suspension that has also been done in a bodgeit and legit fashion. Apparently the front raise has been achieved by welding two spindles together!!! All very dangerous and all needing to be sorted.

So this is a picture of the front wheel to show how the front raise was achieved. Basically a previous owner has welded a second spindle on top of the original.

So tried to upload a video of the underneath of Ted but its to big. Safe to say the tin worm was worst then I had hoped for but not disastrous. The guys at Workshopseventy7 are doing a great job here a couple of photos of the work carried out so far.

Oh the reason he is called ted is that there is a mark on his side that looks like a teddy bear.

That looks like most lift spindles I have seen. Takes two sets to make one. As long as the welding is up to spec, it should be fine.

I searched a little bit but could not quickly find an example from a seller on here. I thought maybe Nate at Wagenswest made them, but I didn't see them on his site.

Hello, all haven't posted for a while, but to date all the welding to the underneath has been completed, the 4in narrow front beam has been fitted along with new king and link pins and dropped spindles. Front drums have been replaced with vented calipers and just in the process of removing old brake lines and master cylinder and replacing with DCMC and new lines.
While removing the old lines I came across something that looked like a servo, on further investigation in turns out a previous owner has fitted a Hydrovac system and connected the vacuum pipe to the Weber manifolds!!!
Has anybody heard of this before?
