This is my build/rebuild thread regarding a 1971 camper I bought from my buddy Charlie last week. I plan to get it running well and then resell it. The big problem right now is the brakes so that's where I'm at right now. Here's some pics

The bus as it sat at Charlie's house in Virginia

So this week the wheels are being powder coated, then Hankook RA08's will be mounted. Right now I'm rebuilding the brakes

I looked between the first and second post, was trying to figure out what was going on.. get it now. Smile
Kinda grungy but looks solid and complete. Should be able to turn some coin.

Hello,
Nice find, to bad it was on the other coast...
How long had it been sitting before the rescue?.
The panels looks straight from what you show and it looks complete but, hows the rust?(the front grill looks very crusty plus some other areas of question). The engine/heater boxes and trans look clean, not covered in oil and grime from forty seven years. And, you still have inner wheel wells, not bad for a east coast bus.... Again, nice find.
It, looks very promising though there flipper boy...
Oh, and there is a octopus living behind the passenger seat....if you didn't notice.
More picture of your project, please...

Stay tuned for more pics and updates. This will be taking me a couple months. I don’t plan to hide anything and this bus has some rust and needs things like window rubber and canvas. I plan on being completely honest with the condition and only expect it to be a good running bus when I’m done

Charlie and I have been samba friends for over 10 years. He lives near DC and has owned this camper for about 15 years I think. Last month he told me he was thinking about selling. He named his price and I bought it. The trucker delivered it to last Sunday. All I did was drive it about 1/2 mile.

It has a pretty nice engine that’s 1776cc with dual Kadrons and is full flowed with an external filter. The shifter was a bit sloppy but I think it’s just some linkage wear. I plan to change the tranny fluid and check the bushing and coupler. The engine will get a tune up and carb synch. Then we’ll see what we have. There is a dual battery system but I still need to check that out. The pop top canvas is missing. I may replace that but that will cause the price to go up a lot.

I’ll be installing rebuilt front disc brake calipers and expect good results with my brake overhaul. Pictures will be coming.

The camper interior is looking good but once again I haven’t fully inspected everything because I’ve only had it a week.

And it should. This is one of those things that, for myself being a cheap bastid, will still pay more if it has new canvas. I know what a bitch it can be replacing them (same with headliner) and I'm willing to pay premium just so won't have to do it.

That looks like a great project, Gary. And it is so so familiar to me by now, having done over a dozen of these "refurbishments". It's not flipping if you are actually doing all that fixing and deferred maintenance.

The hard part for me was deciding when to stop.

Kudos for getting another one back on the road!

Thanks Gary, my bus needed a good home and it found one for sure!!!

Keep us informed...It did have some provenance that I passed along to you, plus a lot of the parts that came with it that I supplied will help defray at least some of your costs. The transport from my house to yours worked out flawlessly which was an added bonus, but then again, nothing should go wrong with all of that, right??

I will miss being a member of the Bay Forum for all these years. There's so many knowledgeable/helpful owners on board. I'm still on the '58-'67 Beetle forum, as I still have my '66.

Looks like the outside just needs a cut and buff to clean up the paint. That poptop needs a good cleaning too!

I think not having any canvas on the pop top would keep some potential buyers from pulling the trigger. If there was an older canvas that was still serviceable I would say clean it up and keep that canvas. Having no canvas I would replace it. Do you plan on new paint or just a cleaning and buffing of existing paint? That might make a difference as well.
The engine improvements are a big plus and the interior looks very complete and pretty clean. I like it.

Keep the updates coming. I'm not far from you and bought my first Westy from a VW guy in Coronado. That was about 3 1/2 yrs. ago. 1970.

Thanks Charlie (Jodi),
You’ve been a good friend so stay in touch.

For those interested, I don’t plan to do anything to the body and paint other than give it a good wash. I’ll probably install new canvas but that’s one job I hate doing. There’s a list of things I need to do but it’s mostly mechanical and not cosmetic.

This thread will talk about some of those things along with pictures. Last night I ordered a set of kick panels off eBay (Werksberg). I try to get something done everyday.

I don’t post much here any more but wanted to take a second to say how happy I am that Rita (Charlie’s Bus) has found a good, albeit temporary, home! I spent many an hour toying with my ‘76 Rivi in Charlie’s driveway while he cogitated on life’s many mysteries and helped me slowly restore my own bus while foregoing work on his. He will truly be missed on the forums, but who knows...maybe I can tempt him back into the world of busses with my new rust-free ‘73 Riviera. I’m only 1,000 away these days. @Gary, looks like you’re doing things right with Rita. Keep us apprised if your progress.

Happy bussing!
Jeff

Oddly, the Kurt Russel screen shot shows a mid 70=s Plymouth Fury and a 73 Chrysler New Yorker.

I own both.

Good luck on your sale
