What is the best way or tool to use to remove and install the fuses in the fuse box with dealer installed a/c. I’ve had some good suggestions to modify the bracket to raise the fuse box to make it more accessible, but this would push the actual wiring at an angle backwards. I’m not sure I’d want to do that. Does anyone have a suggestion for a tool or something to get these things in and out if needed. I pulled one out and fumbled with it for a long while trying to get it back in. Not fun. Only other thing is to put it back in the stock location at some point. But there has to be an easier way to swap them out.

Uhh - I already responded to your question:

My 70 had the dpd dealer installed ac and 4 out of the 10 of mine are 16 amp. I’ve never touched the fuse box until a couple of days ago for the first time I’ve owned it in 15-16 years. My fuse box is located in the trunk. Worst thing I’ve ever come across in this car yet. The fuse box is basically facing down in the top center of the trunk right in front of the fresh air box. I went checking the other day for a burnt fuse, which turned out to be stupidity on my part. Forgot to disconnect the battery and blew two fuses. What a dastardly job getting them back in. The wires aren’t really long enough to pull it out of the holder and it’s in such a position that you can’t get enough grip to get them into those tight contacts. Chaser suggest adding a lift underneath, but that is something I don’t even or car even address the way he did it. Do you guys with dealer installed ac have a. Special tool to pull and push them back in. |
My 1970 also had the dealer-added DPD AC, I removed all but the evaporator (now a simple fan) in 2016. So I had the exact same situation.
So I fabricated a bracket to lift my fuse box up, from a mending bracket from the hardware store that I bent, used two sheet metal screws. I didn't need to add a 2nd bracket on the other side.
With cover on
With cover off for access
So much easier now !!! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. I’m not being crude or anything, but I mentioned your suggestion in my post. Doesn’t it angle the actual wiring too far to the windshield? How did VE change fuses with these back in the day? |
