Any tips on replacing this tensioner? I picked up a 96 Rialta and there is not much tension on belt, squeals for a few seconds at start but clearly tensioner spring is not doing its job.
Looks like dropping motor a bit but any other tips? Drain coolant, unbolt axles and remove exhaust hangers?
I should stick to vanagons….. |

I would first check the routing and ensure it’s the proper belt. That tensioner is over built and is probably fine. But I’d say removing the axle would give you the most room. |

I've searched and can't seem to find much info on R&R procedures for the tensioner, so I assume this means it's fairly stout. Then again, I did find a VW Vortex thread that did mention that dropping the engine was indeed required.
The cruel joke is that the VR6 tensioner is dirt simple to access and service. _________________ Casey--

I think if I remove passenger axle and drop it down 2-3” I should have clearance.
The belt is just slightly loose, perhaps someone put the wrong belt on it but it sure seems there ain’t a lot of tension on it. I bought it with a new alternator but I think the tensioner was overlooked and it’s sufficient enough to work. |

Did you actually try moving the tensioner? It's pretty simple and robust. |

Got underneath today and put channel locks on the tensioner. It’s got plenty of tension. Got part number off belt and it’s not correct.
Much happier to change belt than that tensioner. Now to replace the oil cooler o ring that just blew, was fine last week now it’s pouring oil. I checked stick and just went with the cooler weather I guess |
