Simple answer is check. But would a rear drum that is loosening up or wasn’t torqued correctly show any symptoms? Noise, drivability etc......

Could have noise.

Could have rear wheel wobble.

Could shear the big cotter pin.

Could shear off the splines of the drum and VW will not move when in gear.

O'Reilly has loaner torque wrenches that go to 250 ft lbs. You'll need a 36mm socket.

Also, how do you justify if a rear bearing is bad or not? Any test?

Jack the rear end up and set it on jack stands. Grab the tire at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock and push and pull. Should be very slight play. Never measured it, but maybe 1/16. Keep track of it. As the bearing wears, the play will increase. When it gets really bad, it will start grumbling at you. If it starts grumbling or you have more than 3/16 of an inch play, its time to replace the bearings.
