anyone using the catalytic silencer for their diesel heater? this seems like a really good addition to tame odors and reduce CO for safety. i have some questions!
- does it really finish off the tell-tale diesel smell while running? i imagine there is still a start up odor as it wouldn't get up to temp for a while.
- how hot does it get? think it is an issue for placement? does it need a heat shield on top or bottom?
- what chance would there be that an automotive converter would work in this app? i have a Walker cat for the Vanagon that is compact but i removed it right away as i didn't like the performance hit. nice small size (too small for Vanagon)! _________________ -dan

A properly running heater won't make much smell. There is no converter small enough for the miniscule amount of exhaust to light it off. The restriction would also cause more issue.
(And I have to add - a win for Propex, much cleaner burn) |

That's an interesting development! I'd buy a couple - if there is somewhere one can actually purchase? |

but that photo answered a question... they have what looks like a 2" standoff to keep it away from the vehicle bottom. plus i'd read elsewhere it is a double wall device which would further reduce exterior temps. _________________ -dan

Oh, that's just downright crazy. I guess mine will go on polluting for awhile longer! |

i get it but it's not about pollution, it's about smell and reduced CO for safety. to put its particulate emission into perspective, a diesel heater on low consumes about 0.11 gallons per hour on low heat setting. compare that to an M1 Abrams tank that burns about 38 gallons per hour. there's probably an even number of Ebersparchers and M1 Abrams in the world. <grin>
it would be a luxury expense.... or maybe not so much expense if a clever person could cobble up a spare catalytic lying about. _________________ -dan

I'm curious about the CO output of various heating fuels. I've been led to believe that diesel combustion engines produce less CO than gasoline versions, but I'm not sure if that translates over to uncompressed combustion. As much as I love diesel, the combustion stank does annoy me at times, so finding some way to eliminate or move it elsewhere seems appealing. My TDI van has an aftermarket catalyst, but it only works so-so.
I'll bet if you were a clever thrifty type, you could cut open a diesel cat and break a chunk off of the matrix small enough to work in a custom steel jacket with tube ends of the size needed for a diesel heater. _________________ Casey--

My 2kW one burns ~120mL per hour on low - that's roughly 0.03 US gallons. _________________ Jim Crowther

My D2 sometimes smokes a little on start up, and I can't image a catalytic converter doing much about that. I don't notice any problems with smell once it is up and going.
Maaayyyybeee I'd think about one of these if I didn't already have a muffler and the cost difference were closer. _________________ Dave Cook

Thats pretty funny! Personally I like the smell of kerosene, its a nostalgic aroma from my childhood camping experiences in the 70s and early 80s with kerosene lanterns etc... Diesel, not so much, smells awful to me. But I run straight kerosene on my heater and every time I turn it on or off, that smell of kerosene really brings me back. Its the smell of camping to me |

My concern is how hot does it get?
It's not like your going to set tall grass on fire 'cause it is winter time, but would any heat build up effect anything near it?. So is a heat shield something you are going to need? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Tell me if this is a dumb idea or if I am missing the point (and note that I have a propex so don't know anything about the stock exhaust setup for a diesel heater) but a generic catalytic converter for diesel exhaust is pretty cheap, if goal is to get a catalytic converter and muffler couldn't you fab up something for cheap? I'm seeing a catalytic converter and muffler for around $75 all in:

Oh, absolutely.... WAAAAAAY overkill. But also not $330. _________________ Grant

I'm thinking that if one really wanted a catalytic converter, that giant thing (as compared to the small one made for the heater) would probably never get hot enough to work properly. _________________ Dave Cook

Agreed.
Reading through this article:

Quote: |
The catalyst activity increases with temperature. A minimum exhaust temperature of about 200°C is necessary for the catalyst to "light off" |
200C = 392F
I've never felt the muffler on my D2, but I don't think it's getting that hot. Would a cat really be that effective? |
