Posted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 3:50 pm Post subject: Lowlight Turn Signal question! |
|
|
I hope someone can help me out here!
What type of turn signal switch was used in a April 56 lowlight Ghia?
I found out that some cars have the ones attached with the strap (like oval bugs) and some use the ones that clamb all around the steering wheel tube (like in a lot of busses).
Note that the pictures I used are non Ghia items. They only show how they are attached.
Was it the one with the strap around the steering tube?
Or was it the one that completely wrapped around the steering tube?
In my car I have one that wraps around the steering tube. Is this correct?
Thanks,
Rinie |

IDK, but maybe since the 55/56/57 used Oval wheels they used the strap style ones and the 58/59's used the bus style ones for the 2 year only steering wheels?
Just a guess. _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

My January 56 has the wrap around style..
Do you have a top view of the strap style? My Sept 56 looks to have the strap
My May 58 has the wrap around also.
Maybe both were used as avalable during production? Sorry I couldn't be more help.

The switch on top picture is a Semaphore switch for 53 to 55 Type1 with an early Batwing Steering wheel.
The switch on the bottom picture is used on 56 to 59 Type1 and Ghia 55 to 57 ( I believe) as they use the same later Batwing steering wheel.
58 and 59 switch is a little different as they have a flasher on the switch when you push/pull it. Hope that helps, you can correct me if I'm wrong _________________ Single Cab, Swapmeet Mafia$ |

Thank you guys for all this information!
In one of my boxes of Ghia parts I also found a turn signal switch with a strap. I will put that one on my car since most early Ghia's used Oval parts.
Thanks again!

Hi all,
If you look in a 1958 parts manual, you will find the answer.
Or not
Up to body 22922 the strip was used
From body 22922 the complete wrap around was used.

How many wires does the correct switch for an April '56 have? Is it a 3-wire? _________________ -Thom

If you look at the 1957 parts manual, only the "strap style" turn signal is mentioned, but it has a 141 parts number.

Arrrggh! Lowlight spec is so bloody confusing...I think I'll go and lie down in a darkened room. |
Well not really. If you listened to Richard Troy's talk back in 2005 you will understand. Back in 1955 Germany was still re covering from the war. Karmann would have had more than one supplier of equipment, for the same item. The production line would continue to roll. A worker would grab what he was given and attach it to the car.
We cannot work out what is the correct air cleaner on an engine, because there was more than one option.
Just a guess but I am sure Karmann may have used two different suppliers.
Richard Troy hold many answers, but he refuses to share the information. He has many period photographs from the early years, which will answer many questions, but so far the information is not forthcoming. |
