Came across my dream and got a bus! My entire life I have wanted one. I am fixing this thing up all by myself. Starting with no tools and buying along the way. Which brings me to this forum. Follow me and help coach me if you will, please!
I would love to find some girl friends who have tips. I am always calling my neighbors and guy friends to help loosen a rusty screw, break lug nuts, ect. haha I feel like a pest because I am simply just not as strong.
Here is the first picture of my Bay. Scoobie Doo theme.

I’m a sucker for orange, but I’m also a sucker for a blue and white bus! How much of a Scooby Doo fan are you?
How far into “rebuilding” do you want to go? In other words, what are your goals for the car?
Good luck,

The decals are cheesy in my opinion and take away from how nice the bus could actually be.
Good luck and be sure to search the forums, lol _________________ -Tony

Welcome to the Samba and congrats on the new ride. There have been several of the better sex work on their buses, you can do this. Pick up a basic tool kit (metric) with 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drives, combination wrenches, screwdrivers, vice grips, feeler gauge, and slip jaw (channel lock type) pliers. Go through the Bus FAQs, read Ratwells site, get the Bentley and Muir books. Read the last one first, it’s fun and helps understand working on your own rig if doing this a new adventure. there’s questionable advice and some outdated methods/thinking, but it is fun, easy to read, gives automotive theory in easy to understand terms, and can get you home in a pinch when you can’t get AAA on your cell.
You’ll hear replace fuel lines (do it!), use the proper tires (can be an investment but worthwhile), and to watch out for crappy parts (there’s lots of them). Ask questions. Take pictures. Join a local club. Enjoy your bus:). _________________ 1979 Transporter (sold)

People can get a danged good deal on tools when Lowes has a tool sale. Set my daughter up with a very complete set of mechanic's tools for about $200-250. She could have gotten similar stuff from Harbor Freight for about the same price, but the quality would have been noticeably less. |

About 7 to 8 years ago I had a customer named Brooke who brought me her 1968 bus to do some work on. It was beautiful and I asked her who did the restoration and she said she did. Nice gal and super nice bus. I have pictures if you want _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

the paint will probably be a darker blue under the stickers so the text may show still even with a good buffing and waxing. UV goes deep. People leaving car bras on all the time learned that lesson. That is why you rarely see one these days. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

And some more helpful info. Happy Reading.
As far as "Just not as strong", just get a longer lever.

If you over tighten the Oil Strainer bolt, you will brake the engine case!
There is a Oil strainer in there.
TORQUE THE STRAINER BOLT TO NO MORE THAN 9 FT. LBS. |

Tom Wilson's VW engine rebuild book, not the whole thing, it covers all engines,
just the parts pertaining to yours.
Torque wrench, so you know what nine foot pounds 'feels' like if you have a
Type IV engine with sump nut.
Impact driver & the hammer to drive it, those tin screws are tight & the impact
tool saves hours of frustration with the cooling tin screws. (they're everywhere)
^ This is just the beginning but they are the most important things to have
at the start. |
