|
|
My T3 1.6TD doesn't see winter.
I have the original under engine cover and heat shields in place. The engine stays nice and clean, but I'm worried about heat. I understand that the original designers had this shroud system to get the system warmed up and stay wormed up, but traveling in the summer doesn't seem to fit.
Any ideas or opinions? I see most diesel conversions coming out do not have the covers in place... |

No, the lower cover was designed as a “noise capsule” for sale in Europe where there were stricter regulations on noisy diesels. If you run without it you may find it is noticeable louder. I took mine off 20 years ago and never regretted it. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

I wish mine fit around my updated engine. It’s a much cleaner look. _________________ ☮️ |

A few pro's:
• As Gnarlodious says, it's intended as a noise-reduction measure, and when installed it's fairly effective, esp. if the foam insulation is intact or replaced.
• It will help keep your engine compartment cleaner of dust and other road grime, esp. if you spend many miles on gravel or dirt roads.
• May help the engine warm up faster, important only in winter. I cannot say whether it conversely contributes to overheating in the summer.
A few con's:
• It complicates visibility and access for simple inspections and some repairs.
• A dropped nut or bolt must be fished out with a magnet or grabber and a flashlight, rather than simply plucked up off the driveway.
• It can sometimes cause mysterious buzzy noises until you find the offending fastener, etc.. _________________ Camp Westfalia

I wish my 1.6 still had it. A anything to make my engine quieter.
Does the 1.6TD tin fit the 1.6NA or are the parts distinct? _________________ 1982 Diesel Westfalia 1.6 NA - The Shellakabuukiee |

Although the paper on the development of the diesel vanagon says that the primary purpose was noise reduction, it also significantly reduces warm up times. That effect is particularly important in colder climates, but reducing warm up times will reduce engine wear even in summer or hot climates. |

The engine cover/capsule is different between the 1.6NA and 1.6TD.
The difference being an extra piece to cover the turbo.
Thanks for all the advice. Im going to keep it (notwithstanding the random buzzes from the sheet metal )
FWIW I cross posted on the Brick-Yard and got a definite "keep it" from the European side. |
