I have a lot of squeaky creaky and clunky sounds coming from my front suspension that I haven’t been able to pinpoint. First question is what is the torque spec for the upper control arm (big bolt with the eccentric washers)? I couldn’t locate that in the Bentley although I’m sure I’ve seen it before.

Second bit of fun is that as I was poking around under there, I noticed the mounts for the front diff to the subframe weren’t very tight and my samba search on that led me to believe they could just be “good and tight” or in German of course that’s “gutenteight”. So I tightened them up and this has led to way more vibration at 45-55mph. So the question there is, how tight should the front diff mounts be (all 3)? And should I loosen them back up or leave em tight and look into aligning the drivetrain better?

So y’all know, this is a syncro conversion me and my samba bros did a few years back.

Thanks!

Were the nuts simply loose?
Or did you add shims between etc?

Alika, thank you!!

Sodo, nothing added, just tightened these mounts (maybe too much!). I’ll get under there this afternoon and check.

You`re welcome!
It made me think to compile it all here since I`m in the middle of assembling my front end on the converted Syncro.

Lower shock bolt 150 Nm
Shock rod nut 30 Nm

LCA to subframe 90 Nm
UCA bolt through chassis 75 Nm

UBJ M8 bolts 60 Nm
Ball joint nut 100 Nm ( revised from 110 Nm)

Radius rod nut 150 Nm
Radius rod bolts x3 ( stamped LCA) 100 Nm

Propshaft bars and skid plate 45 Nm
Propshaft flange bolts 35 Nm

Axle nut 350 Nm ( revised from 320 Nm)

Cv joint bolts 35 Nm ( pretty sure I saw 50 Nm somewhere, that seems low)

Stabilizer bar clamps/ spacer to frame 25Nm
Endlinks 30 Nm

Front differential flat bar across the subframe 45Nm
Front differential round arched tube across the subframe ??Nm
Front differential M8 case bolts 20 Nm ( in case you open it)

Subframe rear bolts 85 Nm
Subframe front bolts 45 Nm

Caliper 240 Nm

The metal ear through which your bushings are going/ sitting on is bent downward a bit, I can see a gap

So just to clarify, so we are off to the right start...
Can you tell me if I understand correctly?

You had squeaks etc.
And the bolts in those front diff mounting assemblies were loose.
You tightened them.
They took “so much” that you are concerned you gave it “too much”?

Basically they are supposed to be tight, M10 tight.
If they were loose, thats a problem.
Maybe they were assembled wrong.
They should never have come loose.

And on the other side of the concern, its not really reasonable that the bolts can be “too tight” (other than the obvious, and damaging the fasteners & spacers etc).

Kinda hard to do mechanikking with a phone, but pics help a lot!!
And this is how we gotta do it.
No worries bro we’ll be here to the end!.

The spectre of vibrations is one I don’t wanna be faced with, so I’m very observant on this subject you’ve raised.
