At a friends house to help him reinstall his transmission and then this happens
What do you think? Is he screwed? He might try to JB weld it

X2. that's used car dealer "run it thru the auction" bullshit right there. it may hold for a minute or 2 but I wouldn't go out of walking distance with a 'repair' like that

I’ve seen JB weld hold parts together for 30 years and counting. In some cases (no pun intended) there’s no chance it will work, in others, it’s an entirely reasonable option. This appears that it may be the latter.
If you’re a pro and banking your reputation on the result using JBweld would be dumb. If you’re fixing your own van and understand the consequences it may be a risk worth taking.
Looking forward to hearing the outcome.

| I would have put a nice flat piece of metal under that board and then tightened the crap out of the C-clamp. Don't want the repair to be raise up at all compared to the rest of the surface. |

Grease the square o`ring well when assembling, as to not force on your repair and you might be fine. If thers`s room, make a reinforcement from the inside.
Or you could have it welded, ductile iron I believe it is. Not many people know how.

I have a good used differential I could let go for a good price if it comes to that. Hope the repair works. I’ve seen JB weld perform small miracles.

Agreed a pro can't do that, but shadetree could be OK, as long as you're OK with taking it all apart again if it leaks.
Doing it then selling right away it is not real nice, but if it goes a few years and no leaks.....
Per AlikaT3 .... (and not seeing it in-person, I don't know the purpose of that gap...) carefully fit some steel supports across to the inside, that fill the gap completely and support the constant 0-ring pressure.
O-ring pressure is trying to break your JB-weld, it's a LOT of force across a couple inches of 0-ring.
Carefully JB-Weld the supports in-place too.
It's a risk but it could work.

I like brazing too.
That requires a skill, some brazing equipment, probably complete teardown.
I don’t know anything about that housing or if complete teardown is a big deal.
I suppose it can be done later if the JB doesn’t survive.

That area isn't under any stress, it's just a sealing surface. So as long the JB weld is filed smooth, it should be fine.

+1, I would worry less about whether the repair will hold (jb weld is pretty stout and the surfaces should have plenty of tooth) and more about how well the resulting seal surface is planed but seems like a decent shot at a long tern fix here. In any case, nothing to lose and assuming dropping an auto trans on a vanagon is as simple as dropping a standard trans then you're not gambling an insane amount of remove and replace time if it does fail.

Soldering requires less heat and the job could probably be done with nothing more than a propane torch. |

It will be fine. Thats not even mid-pack for the things this surprisingly high end epoxy can and will do. Just seal pressure here. Perfect fix though certainly not something a shop should do, as they get paid NOT to do this stuff. Carry on.
