I am putting together an old project that had some work done at a shop that wasn't the best, and is now defunct. But the wiring is a mess, I have most of the lights and accessories working but noticed my ignition coil was heating up. I havent run the car or motor yet just installed everything and seeing what works. Is the coil suppose to heat up when hooked up to a battery and I mean really hot almost too hot to touch. I only noticed it when swapping the plugs and oil that it was burning up. Also would love some advice for the best places to hook up an electronic fuel pump as I will be running that as well. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated |

Yes, a coil will get hot and burn itself out if left energized for long, inactive durations.
If you run an electronic fuel pump, you need a safety circuit that cuts power to it, in an accident. Old rabbit relays do a good job. _________________ Jimbo

It will get hot if the ignition is in the ON position. If it is getting hot with the key in the OFF position, then something is wrong in your wiring. The coil should get switched power - switched by the ignition. _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74

Well the coil will only get hot when the points are closed.. Not good for the points either. Miss wire and you would not be able to turn the engine off.
