I’m rebuilding a engine that came with a project 64’ Bus I bought. It has been rebuilt before, but looks clean. I’m in the process of rebuilding it and using it as a spare motor to have, as all of us “VW guys” have way to many VW’s laying around that seem to always have troubles.

I’m trying to do it on the cheapest way possible and reuse as many parts as possible that came with it within reasons. The motor is a 1600 SP with CB “Cheater Cam” being the only upgrade I’ve made. The carb is a 28 Pict 1 and the distributor is a ZV/PAU 4 R 5. I have very limited knowledge of these two parts. Do they make a good match for the combo that I’m running? My plan is to have Volkzbitz rebuild any carb that I plan on using.

A 28PICT-1 and a ZV/PAU 4 R 5 will work.

Tim does great work on the carbs. I can rebuild the distributor if you like.

My only thought is to make sure if either of the carb or the vacuum can on the distributor have the little insert, I believe they both must.

I've used the 4R5 with the initial 28PICT, which does not have the vacuum restriction and it does fine, after all, there was no restriction when the 4R5 was introduced.

All that restriction does, is introduce a very slight time delay in vacuum reaching the distributor.

Now VW did state that when they shifted away from the 4R5, they wanted the vacuum restriction in place

Regardless, the 28PICT-1 should have that restriction in place anyway.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.
