Are the backs/insides of Beetle bumpers chrome or painted? I have a 1967 Beetle (Deluxe US Spec), and the back/inside of each bumper looks like a dull gray - I'm thinking either unpolished chrome, or perhaps L91 paint.
Thanks! _________________ -Harry

Yes, I saw that one, but that thread's subject was bumper support brackets, and only in passing incorrectly states Garwood says the back of the bumper is painted (as far as I can see in my copy, he only talks about the entire standard bumper being painted, or the color of the brackets - nothing about the back of the deluxe bumpers). I was trying to find confirmation.
From that topic:

As a follow up, I know aftermarket bumpers (such as WW) are painted in the back, but I'm wondering if OEM ones are. _________________ -Harry

Yes- Silver paint in the inside- same as upright support tubes and brackets.
I also use the wheel paint for its durability- but I rub it with a coarse towel when dry to knock off the excessive gloss. It also slightly dulls the metallic sheen- resulting in very factory-looking finish. _________________

Grey Hammerite paint is very similar to the one VW used inside the bumpers. |

The back of the front bumper was painted, but not so on the rear bumper. At least that is how mine is, and almost every stock Bug I have seen from this era is like that.

That paint color is spot on. I was going to say I'd love to see your bumpers, but it occurred to me that might sound odd . Do all of them have the little VW logo stamped in them? I've seen one that says "Made in West Germany" but no VW logo; not sure if that's NOS or aftermarket. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Both front and rear were painted on both of my '67s and my '65. Check your non painted bumper blade and see if there's a little VW logo stamped on it toward the center of the bumper backside. It may be aftermarket. Easy to tell if it's Brazilian aftermarket given the rubber grommet between the blade and overriders they used. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Thanks for showing your rear; very nice! (ahem... ) Interesting, though, it comes with the mounting brackets and supports painted in black when they were silver (WW "Chrome" paint) from the factory. I looked at pics of my former 1960 Karmann Kab and they were silver. That wouldn't stop me from buying your bumper, though _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

From a suggestion from another person, what do you all think about the idea the backs may have been unchromed nickle?

I agree that the bumper blade backs (front and rear) are painted the same color as the inside of the uprights ...and that there's no sense to the idea that 'deluxe' model bumper blades would be any different than 'standard' model bumper blades. That would be a very strange thing for VW to do back in the day. _________________ "If you can't fix it with pop rivets, crazy glue and duct tape, or hold it together with zip ties, velcro or magnets, it REALLY is broken." |

So the uprights and bracket color changed mid-year I believe in '61 to silver, this is a replacement bumper and my former VW partsman friend told me replacement bumpers came with black brackets. |

my early in year model build 61 Bug had black overrider supports and bumper brackets. I repainted them like original, black when I was a kid, still black today, Once black, you dont go back, at least that is what the originalist said.

While the structure of the bumper would be the same between the standard (economy) and deluxe (nicer) bumpers, it makes sense to me that they may be treated differently (one chromed, and the other not). The standard Beetle had very little chrome on it. From Garwood (1967 color matrix) below. My emphasis added.
"*STANDARD MODELS (1200) WERE OFFERED IN THESE COLORS-ALONG WITH L87 PEARL WHITE, WHICH HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM THE DELUXE BODY COLOR LIST FOR 1967. BUMPERS, OUTSIDE HANDLES AND HUB CAPS WERE ALL PAINTED THE SAME L328 STEEL GRAY AS IN 1966. STANDARD SUNROOF MODELS STILL HAD PVC FABRIC SLIDING TOPS INSTEAD OF THE DELUXE'S STEEL TOP. THE PVC TOP COLORS MATCHED THE BODY ON THESE EUROPEAN MODELS" _________________ -Harry

I don't remember the brackets and such being black on either my '65 or '67. Like the bumper backs, they were a dull silver-grey. I painted mine bright silver and then saw some original cars and realized it was a little too shiny. |
