Please don't flame me too much.

I need some help choosing tyre size and was surprised to not find a vintage speed topic on this issue and figured there'd be some interest in this topic.

I've a set of 5.5wide 15" mangles Porsche style rims.

I'm chasing this look in terms of tyre filling the guard gap. I am stock height.

But can't decide on a tyre size.

I'm considering 195/65/15 maybe. Was also suggested a 205.

Keep in mind they're 5.5 wide. Not stock width.

What options are there for a vintage looking sidewall?

It's not exactly the same as I wanted to keep mine more period sizing. I'm running 155r15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres on 4.5" 356 rims. I have 20mm 'carrera' spacers on the rear.

there is no way you're going to fill the fender gap unless you run much larger tires, in which case your final gearing will be all out of whack. You'll need a bigger engine to turn the tires, or lower your gear ratios.

Why not install drop spindles and lower the rear just slightly? it won't look 'slammed' and it will handle even better.

These Dunlop's are a nice, vintage tire. I believe they're run on the Chris Runge cars and look great w/ 356 rims. I'm not sure if they're DOT approved for street use though.

I think you're right about the ride height.

I've just been offered some vintage style kleber tyres. Im going to look at them tonight.

Post up some pictures if you get the Klebers. I haven't seen these tires since the 90's...I used to run them on my bus. Their tire pattern is similar to Michelin tires. Are they new, or REALLY old?

I was told they're new. I've not idea the age stamp on them. I've not even seen them, nor could I find a photo online.

So plan deviation/ plan B, as I haven't heard back on these vintage style tyres.

My work had 2 scrap 195/65/15 and 2 185/60/15

So for the hell of it I'll give them a shot Tomorrow. Make sure they clear everything as I'm not really sure the offset of these rims.

They're definitely not the look I was going for. But they may help me choose sizes if I end up going the Pirelli or other recommendations above

if you're stock height, those front tires are going to look tiny and give you a lot of fender gap. the rears might work ok though

I'm currently shopping for new tires as well, so glad to see this discussion.

I picked up some 4.5" wide Vintage 190 wheels and have been looking at tires. I've narrowed it down to Pirelli CN36 in 185/70-15s all around or Vredstein Sprint Classic 155SR15s up front and 185/70-15s in back.

Erik T's '58 is really what I've used as my guide for wheel width and tire sizing as the look he's achieved is excellent, IMO. I did come across a car at a local show this summer with the Vredstein combination I mentioned above though, and it looked pretty good. Definitely a bit more clearance up front. Still haven't settled on which ones yet, but I think it will be one of those.

Decisions, decisions......

You're 110% the fronts are a joke. A 3 inch drop would be needed

Due to time crunch this is plan B. I'm dropping several bags of Cement in the front and behind the rear seat as a temporary lowering method.

Post show I think I'll grab some drop spindles and some Pirelli / Michelin tyres in the right size

First couple of test drives. Gave the front a 120kg drop to suit these temporary tyres.
