Next up my friend Matt and I removed the paint on the shell.
Matt did a great job helping, the shell looks great! I plan to finish the rest off with a sand blaster.
I stripped the rear apron to find what I expected. TONS of filler. Im considered drilling the spot welds and seeing what I can do to fix it. I wasnt planning on putting fiberglass in this car, but might consider a fiberglass rear apron. Ive had good luck with Glass-action/Innovations in Fiberglass with their type 3 euro bumpers, so Id be more than willing to purchase from them again. Whats the communities suggestions? Fix the OG or order the fiberglass repop?

What was the original color? But mostly it depends on personal taste i guess
As for the rear apron, is it in really bad shape? I would try to save the original! Or try to score a cutout or something? Maybe you could find something on the classifieds |

They look best with 2 tone paint & hubcaps like some Beetle wheels were painted.
You get to pick the 2 colors!

After all the metal work you’ve done, a fibreglass rear apron would be an injustice. |

Agreed. I showed pics of fixing the one for my 71 Notch that had been mangled pretty good, so if you can remove it without doing more damage to it, I'd go that route. Otherwise, I'd try and find a rust free one, and straighten it out and weld it on. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

With the car down to bare metal, its time for rust repair on the body. No matter the area, I had to tackle it all!
The Luggage tray needed some love.
Patches were made for many spots, but pinholes were carefully welded using the Pro-Spot SP5 Silicon Bronze mig welder. It produces less heat than normal welding.
Under the quarters had spots that needed some repairs. Welded on patch and waterproof filler was used over top.
Some were easier spots to repair than others, but making it water proof is key.
Decided to plug the hole for the horn wire as Ill relocate it for a cleaner look.

The drivers side pop out window lip had rust that was repaired along with the luggage tray.
After the window lip was repaired and a lip was made for the luggage tray patch, it was cut to shape, a bead rolled, contour made from the english wheel and welded in.
Then waterproof filler and conventional filler over top.

A spot in the drivers side pillar to the dash needed a dime sized patch to reconnect them.
The drivers side rocker needed to be replaced.
cut out the old
corrosion protection
Make a new one with the contour of the original
Made a mating flange
Glued on with 3M 8115 panel bond

Next up is body working all the repair areas with a waterproof filler, then conventional filler and putty over top to get it straight and true.
Once everything was straight, smooth and good to go, it was prime time! _________________ 1957 Oval Semaphore Beetle

No time was wasted, out of the booth and off its floor pan.
Big thanks to Bobnotch for reference photos of separating the two with factory photos!
Next up a lot of time was taken to fit up the new funky green floor pan!
I rivet bonded it on with 3M 8115 panel bond and steel pop rivets.
Attached is a video I made of the process.

This repair took less time and will be stronger and have better corrosion protection than welding. Any of you type 3 owners can do this exact procedure if you dont have a welder. _________________ 1957 Oval Semaphore Beetle

After replacing the passenger side floor pan, the drivers side need some repair. I decided to patch it up using pieces from the passenger side floor pan or recycled metal.
There was some damage in the drivers front corner so it was cut out and repaired using some left over funky green metal.
There was pin holes that were carefully plugged and areas that were cut out and patched.
My dads first real time MIG Welding. Talented welder and fabricator but never learned the "Modern" welding method. He prefers TIG or a Torch!
Seam sealer and even duraglas was used over seams to help with sealing the mating surfaces and offer corrosion protection.
The passenger side that was replaced then had the seat rails, and a few other pieces taken care of.

After the pan was prepped, all welds dressed, duraglas and seam sealer used, I then did a coat of Epoxy, primer surfacer on repair areas, left to sit over night, sanded out 240, 500 and grey scotch brite, Sealed with white urethane sealer because thats all the shop had at the time, 1980 Volkswagen L041 Black was the black I was able to mix, then two coats of Clear. Afterwords, it was masked and then two coats of Lizard Skin sound Control was sprayed on the inside surface.
Two "Coats" of lizard skin meaning three passes per coat to equal .020" thickness per coat with one hour in between. Tape took off some of the one day old black and clear, so I sanded it back and touched it up. If I had to do it again, I would do the lizard skin first and then not worry about black overspray on top of that. All in all looks good to me! _________________ 1957 Oval Semaphore Beetle

Very nice. Somebody stayed very busy the last couple of weeks. I hope your students will get to see some of the processes you used. Especially the adhesive being used. They probably wouldn't understand the "lizard skin" part, unless they were into audio (sound deadening). Very well done. Just needs to go back together now (will take twice as long). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
