What is the difference between FAG and ATE and what do they stand for? I looked in the dictionary and couldn't locate them.

Hi Linda,

FAG and ATE are just the names of two major brake part suppliers back in the day (and now) to Volkswagen. Both are basically the best quality you can get, but remember that NOS parts may be quite old now and that may affect seals, etc.

FAG Kugelfischer was bought and dismantled by INA Schaeffler in 2001

ATE (Alfred Teeves) was bought by Continental and is still in the brake business.

If you are looking for a replacement master cylinder, units that have had a life on the shelf are not what you want. If it is old the rubber parts are junk and it is just a good core if you have access to the correct seals.

Got it Bill and thanks to the other comments.
My 67 does not have a duel and eventually I will replace the single and now starting to learn. Knowing that who is the best at rebuilding them and yes first I'll need to buy one. I have read some companies are good at repro's but I prefer the best. Suggestions?
Thanks again, the education continues.

ATE still produces them. So you might want to get one of those...

FAG is still there, just the name on the building has changed to Schaeffler. I was just at home in Schweinfurt. SKF is also still there, as is Fichtel&Sachs. Ball Bearings, clutches, shocks, all still there.

KugelFischer after the inventor of the machine that makes the actual ball bearings. Same method still used today. Invented in my home town...
