I have been looking and looking through old posts to find information about the storage spot over transmission.
Can anyone help me find directions to help me cut new holes in my perfectly good bus?
Thank you.

Thanks for posting that link from memory lane. I remember when that was originally posted, and figuring out that Andrew has a hint of genius. In part, I think this thread prompted me to tuck a bunch of stuff under there when I did my TDI swap. _________________ Casey--

There is a better one I just can't find atm. Its a less aggressive one, where the area between the engine cover and the rear seat was cut, and a box added under there, and a fab'd cover for the hole. Can't remember the poster's handle. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

I think Andrew did both methods. _________________ Casey--

Found a couple of links to what you wanted in another thread. Both are deleted threads now....
I really like this idea. Since my aux battery and aux. fuse box have stolen away almost a lot of the under seat storage space that I used before for tools, parts, manual, meter, etc., those moved under the rear seat.
Now, If I could move my tools and a few other seldom-used items under that floor, I could gain back my lost portion of under seat storage.
I'm not sure how big a hatch "I" would feel comfortable cutting, but I'd certainly feel OK using marine circular screw hatches in the rear deck. Problem is getting a box up above the tranny while the tranny is still in place. That's a problem that those brave enough to cut a large opening would not have.
Edit - these "tempress hatches" from West marine look interesting - multiple sizing. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/tempress--access-ha...ecordNum=3
They sell hatch boxes, called liners as well https://www.westmarine.com/buy/tempress--access-hatch-liners--P024_720_003_515?recordNum=37 _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

You could convert it to a Syncro and use that space to store your fuel.

It's nice that old link has libbeys photos still. Most of his photos on many useful topics have vanished.
Capture them while you can!

I remember seeing many posts from Andrew a while ago (5-10 yrs?) - what happened to him? I cannot even find him in the memberlist. _________________ 87 Syncro Westy EJ25 ("Tardis")

Andrew is still around. I ran something by him a few months ago. I believe I reached out to him through vwdiesel.net
With a unibody chassis, you need to pay attention to what you are cutting away and how you add the reinforcement back. A panel may appear to offer no strength but could end up being part of the chassis backbone. _________________ ☮️ |

my only concern is compromising the integrity of the angled pane that secures the seat belts.
it looks like if a full sized adult was buckled in, that the panel would pull outwards.. not saying it would let loose. but to be aware of the potential physics involved.
the starter is much more accessible, if you use a removable panel in the box.

No reason not to do this, but vans resale value might be impacted. Post up as you go. _________________ ☮️ |

Ok here's a question regarding that space. I have a 2wd '87 wolfsburg aka weekender.
I would really like a built in water tank . I've looked at under frame versions of water tanks and the camper model ones in the cabinets . The cabinet one just won't work and the under the frame ones might, But tell if I am wrong, the synchros use that space for the fuel tank? Has anyone ever tried a water tank in that space? Its a weird shaped space I admit. |
