Hey all,

My rad fan was not functioning on low power so I decided to change it. I located an early 1990s VW Golf and used its radiator fan. It was a direct fitment in the shroud and seems to be operating just fine.

Easy find and am happy with the results.

Found them new on Rockauto if anyone is looking for one:

I hope that fan works out for you under summer duress.
The original Vanagon fan was rated at 300/200 watt.
VW Parts lists that used fan of your as only 100/60 watt, ( 191959455J )

There is a more powerful version rated 250/150 watt.
VW# 165959455AM (also as MTC 4521 for a new aftermarket)

Good to know! I am in Canada and it doesn't get all that hot where I am. I will report back if I have any issues. Thanks for the reply!

Seems a little weird the Vanagon fan would be that much higher output. While it is an antique engine compared to the Golf the horsepower is probably less and it has all that distance to cool down before it gets to the radiator.

Learn something new every day.

I wonder what the CFM's of each fan is?

The Vanagon has a much larger radiator if I recall correctly. Larger and thicker.
Maybe 12” x 24” x 1 1/2” (tanks) or so?

The average hp might well be higher in a Vanagon, just compare the gas mileage between the two to figure out how much heat they need to dump through the radiator.

If you look up 2wd late 80s T3 (Vanagon) in the VW Parts database they show with 4 different fan watt ratings in European models.

200 single speed - 60 hp gas wbx
300/200 dual speed - 60-112 hp gas wbx
450 (2 speed via external resistor) - 57 hp 1.7D
500 (2 speed via external resistor) -70 hp 1.6TD
WBX vehicles with factory towing, factory A/C, or factory set up for use in warm climates used the 450.

They also show 3 different capacity radiators.

In the US market we got only the highest capacity radiator with 300/200 fan unless factory A/C then a 450 fan. (Syncros used 450 fan only.)
