I've gotten interested lately in English Ford wheels (Anglia, Thames, Prefect, etc.) ; these are 16" diameter by, I think, 3.25" wide, and which will bolt onto a wide-five VW...
I just acquired three from a VW buddy here in CT, over the Christmas 2013 break:
I had one back about 6 or 7 years ago, never got my "stuff" together enough to figure out that it was kinda cool & unique, and ended up selling it. Here are a couple of pictures I took for my old SAMBA ad, when I was trying to sell it, to show that it would bolt onto a VW (my '60 Bug is the model for these photos):
And right after I bought those initial three, another VW buddy out in Ohio saw my SAMBA "wanted" ad and sent me this picture of his three, for which I have sent him funds:

So anyway, I will be embarking on a new restoration project soon, with these six pieces, and will try to track progress in this thread--also welcome any & all fellow owners/enthusiasts of these English Ford wheels to post pictures (no matter what shape--pre, post restoration, bare, with tires, loose, on cars, etc., what-not) & stories.
What do you like or dislike about them?
What other comments do you have about them?
What tires do you run on yours?
And any & all other subjects, photos, other links & references, related to ENGLISH FORD WHEELS...

Yep, 5 on 205mm bolt circle, saw a set of Flat-4 BRMs on a Stock Prefect (Anglia 4-door) once....looked a little weird....

i had a set on a og angelia axle(cable brakes crap!) i i had procurred to use as a axle building jig for a dragster i was building they looked cool verry narrow in the 3-3.5 in range i only had 2 and was ent intrested in em at the time but spread a 2nd set n go through the coker catalog till ya get the perfrct set of tires and youd be nailed , bias plys a must for the look ,

Although these are not early Ford wheels, this is my friends car with Opel wheels and polished Porsche brakes.

They look alot better with white walls. This is a set I own but put away in storage for another project when the time is right I'm hoping to put them on my 54 porsche pre a coupe

Ixnay on the Ubcaps-Hay...
So, I did a test fit of a standard ’65 & earlier type domed VW hubcap on one of the English Ford wheels, and they will not work. The “recess” into which the hubcap fits on VW wheels must be slightly bigger in diameter, as the hubcap will not get close enough to the clips on the Ford wheels.
Oh well, no biggie, especially since I did not envision using these wheels with hub caps to begin with.
I might end up removing all of the clips before I go to the sandblaster guy...

Steve, how about this all-black treatment, but with a thin cream-colored pinstripe along the outer rim edge- in the shallow channel where you clamp on wheel balancing weights? This would not only break up the total blackness of the wheel against the tires, but indicate a "deluxe" touch found in the late '50's.

I decided long ago that I would go hub-cap-less with these wheels, and once I realized that VW hub caps do not work on these, I also decided to go clip-less. So, today (Sunday, February 9th, 2014), I de-clipped all six of the wheels.
Step 1: Locate upset head of rivet on the back side of the wheel. The vast majority today were very easy to locate. On this one I had to do some wire brushing to bring out a very faint outline...
Step 2: Take a sharp punch and try to hit the center of the rivet. The punch impression will help your drill bit settle into the proper spot...
Step 3: Get a good sharp drill bit and go at it. I used a 11/64" diameter bit. Don't worry too much, since I am *guessing* the rivet material was at least a little softer than the wheel material, and so your drill bit will probably tend to stay inside the softer rivet material...
Step 4: You don't have to drill all the way thru the rivet. Just get in there to a reasonable depth, and then use a flat-bottom punch to knock it out...
Step 5: Admire your work--first how the pieces come apart after you knock 'em out--a small "ring" from the upset side of the rivet, and then the rest of the rivet and clip, from the front side of the wheel...
Step 6: Complete a wheel...
Step 7: Complete all six wheels (yes, I still have to get that tire taken off the sixth one--I'm going to hopefully get that done this week at the local garage)..
My next stop will be my friendly local sandblaster guy, but I may wait until March or so, since I am going to need some reasonable conditions to get bare metal wheels primed--and you don't want to let bare steel, freshly sandblasted wheels sit around without protection...

Today I would like to document a landmark event in the progress of my mini-project...
I had decided, upon hearing from my buddy Trevor, that his superb local powdercoating company, Shoreline Coatings, in North Branford, CT - http://shorelinepowdercoating.com/home/ - was going to be having a sale on powdercoating wheels during the month of April, to have him do up the best four of my collected group of six, using one of his stock colors (stock colors were specified in the terms of the April sale)...
So, a couple of weeks ago I met with Trevor over at his shop, showed him the wheels, talked about the project (which was definitely also going to involve sandblasting to clean and prepare them, due to their rusty condition), and selected a color (decided on a color replicating "anodized aluminum," which is kind of a semi-gloss silver--I felt it would look kind of "technical," and also help the slots stand out).
The price was extremely reasonable, and the turnaround was prompt. I could not be happier!
Check 'em out in these pictures from this afternoon (Wednesday, April 16th, 2014). One shot shows the back of one, to show that it is riveted construction.
The processing that included the sandblasting and coating also brought out some cool markings that I'm going to try to photodocument also, when I have more time. There were some apparent date codes, some other unknown codes, and at least one cool "Ford" script marking (faint--but it's there!)... Trevor was wondering what I was going to do with them--have fun using 'em on my old VW of course, Trevor!!!

Thanks Rome, including the pinstripe idea. I would say it's do-able and merits further investigation. I will be looking for examples to see how others may have done something like this, and if you or anyone have any example pictures, I'd love to see them. Thanks again!
