I don't know what's involved in a carb/turbo combination, although the turbo looks like a decent size.
I thought you had all the obd1 stuff to fulfill the swap? |

An SU or Stromberg carb would be better suited for a turbo application. I just don’t think the Weber will work with the boost in the throttle plates. It depends on low pressure to pull the fuel out of the bowl.
While vintage in their design, the SU carb meters fuel based on air flow, not low pressure. I could also be wrong. |
I'm going look up what's SU or Stromberg carb thanks Mark! _________________ Roger

Yeah that's what I thought also but after opening the ECU it was an obd2... I was like f(_-@-+$ me!
So I'm building based on what I have for the time being that's why I asked if it was a problem with heads of a 1985 jetta 1.8 _________________ Roger

On a positive note a have the engine on a sidewalk somewhere in Mexico hahaha! That's what happens when you don't have a shop and the engine is heavy for a 2 person team.
I'm disassembling the intake and heads also exhaust manifold I hope it's litter. Dam the aba's are heavy. Well every motor is heavy actually.
Ok folks time to have breakfast on the side of the street and beging my day of with the right foot (until something breaks hahahhaha)

At least it's sunny there!
Good to see the progress Roger.

English cars from the 50s and 60s used SU carbs. The early Datsun 240z and a couple other Datsuns used a copy of the SU carb. _________________ ☮️ |

Some early Volvo 140 series also used SU or Stromberg carbs.

Indeed, the Datsuns use Hitachis that were almost carbon copies of an SU. Hard to find parts for them. _________________ '86 Westy FAS GenV Turbo (Marvin) |

Sorry Kghues that I didn't respond copy that is that I'm out of shape and struggling to pull wrenches
So I managed to pull the motor into the little back yard of my house with the head on in with a little dolly that I have and I'm disassembling the head to inspect cylinder wear and man o man I think I got a winner engine here everything was in good shape clean with no signs of gunk in the upper section and really little oil in the lower section, no sealing gasket maker anywhere with the original or the appropriate gaskets.
Because I'm on a budget again because of Covid I think that I'm assembling the motor with my previous set up that I had just for the meantime: 1995 ABA block, 1985 1.8 heads, and the carb. Then save some more money to buy either the obd2 stuff harness or the obd1 ECU to make it run. (plus the whole 9 yards of stuff like Bentley manual, turbo stuff, etc etc etc)
After that go for the turbo setup!!! I'll keep you posted with photos as I advanced
I was thinking of a cam for now but its black Friday and we want a lap top so im gonna miss on the cam and have the wife happy (and my self also hahaha)

Good news on your engine. To me, your engine looked "nice and dry" so I thought it might look nice inside too.
IM = "Instant Message". On this forum it's called PM: "private messaging".

Hey that's really good news on the motor! Yeah you can't do too much on the cam if you can't address fuel at the same time, carburetor or otherwise. You can increase valve lift and duration, but you're still limited by the amount of air you can get through the throttle and venturi bores even if you can jet it to get more fuel. Sounds like you have a good path now to a quick build that'll get you on the road with decent power and enjoying the van again while you cogitate on whether and what you might want to do in the future.
Even though you'll never get all the driveability you could get with FI, if you know carbs you'll also never be stuck on the side of the road with an EFI component issue you can't fix either. I started rebuilding carbs way back in the '60s and still kind of miss them

There's nothing like pumping the throttle a few times to start a cold engine, to have it stall during warm up, to have hesitations, to have it run differently depending on how hot/cold it is outside, to have the engine run terrible over the pass, to have the idle speed change at every traffic light, to have the idle change when the A/C is on, etc.
You guys are nuts! Carbs had their day and you are nuts to think throwing a turbo with carbs will make it run better.
If you can't go fuel injection, it's best that you do not even take on the project. If you do not know how FI works, then check out the internet. You could spend hours learning and be better off for it.
The only time CIS or EFI has let me down was because of a worn out fuel pump or an occasional fuel pump relay. |

The only good experiences I've had with carbs over the years were with the 30 Pict Solex and whatever dual Solex was on the '67 Type III. Mostly rock solid, as were of course the Bings on BMW R-bikes. Everything else was a shit-show of maladies and malaise. I can't even stand being stuck behind an old carbed car nowadays due to the wretched stank of the exhaust. _________________ Casey--
