I have a Red 1971 411 wagon and the wheels are in tough shape. What color were the rims originally? My dad painted these silver in 78, but I seem to recall that the original color was white or cream. I just bought new rubber and wanted to clean the rims up before I mount the tires. |

I bought my car new in 71, and the wheels were the standard vw gray as seen on I think all their cars back then. Ray can probably be more specific about the color spec. Bob |

So there were really only possibly two colors...and really only one because I think its just an oddity of how they listed the rim colors in the parts book.
So your car is a 411 wagon. I think that makes it a 461 model. As a 1971 model your cars paint might have been L-31 F (Iberian red). I cannot find any colors listed for "wheel disc" other than L-91 "chrome colored" (meaning silver). I have also never seen any stock rims other than silver.
But....The way they list appears that some may have been black....the same color as used in the interior hard parts...but I think its just a notation issue....there were many in the parts book. Like this:
Note the very bottom line.
And the next page showing L-91.
Here is some more info with a couple of resources that kind of backs up L-91 as a very common rim color...in this rather "bitchy" thread.

I think it was the grayish silver used on the other Types' wheels, at least the late 4-lugs. It is not the bright silver that most rattle cans produce.
Probably the backsides were black. And at least on the Types 1&3, if you ordered the trim rings the front sides were black as well.

Yes...I think the type 4's are identical to the type 3.
In the book they list the wheel Part # 311601 025C .....and the "Rim Embellisher-road wheel" (trim ring)...part #311 601 155
From the 411/412 parts book:

Thanks gents. Had a crew of HS kids over today who (with my son) changed plugs, drained the varnish from the fuel tank, replaced some fuel lines, cleaned the fuel sending unit, repaired a broken (chewed?) FI wire and checked/changed some fuses. Between your help and theirs, we might get this rig rolling! |
